Safety Manager - Gateway

Role description Arcadis seeks a highly skilled and motivated Safety Manager to support the Gateway Hudson Tunnel Project (HTP), a critical component of the Gateway Program in the United States. The project involves constructing a new two‑track rail tunnel beneath the Hudson River and rehabilitating the 113‑year‑old North River Tunnel, which serves over 200,000 daily passengers via Amtrak and NJ TRANSIT. Role accountabilities Assist in the development, implementation, and maintenance of a comprehensive safety program specific to the heavy civil tunnel project. Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal safety regulations and standards. Conduct regular safety audits and inspections to identify and address potential hazards. Collaborate with the Safety Director to develop and deliver safety training programs for all project personnel. Ensure that all workers are adequately trained on safety procedures, equipment usage, and emergency response protocols. Conduct toolbox talks, safety meetings, and workshops to reinforce safety awareness. Assist in the investigation of accidents, incidents, and near‑misses to determine root causes and develop corrective action plans. Maintain accurate records of all safety incidents, ensuring timely reporting and analysis. Monitor and enforce adherence to safety policies and regulations by all project personnel. Work closely with subcontractors to ensure their safety programs align with project requirements. Collaborate with regulatory agencies during inspections and audits. Develop and implement emergency response plans for various potential scenarios. Conduct regular drills and exercises to ensure effective responses to emergencies. Communicate safety expectations, updates, and best practices to all project team members. Foster open communication channels for reporting safety concerns and suggestions. Ensure the availability and proper use of safety equipment and personal protective equipment (PPE). Conduct regular inspections of safety equipment to verify functionality and compliance. Identify opportunities for continuous improvement in safety processes and procedures. Implement initiatives to enhance the overall safety performance of the project. Required Qualifications 10+ years of safety compliance experience on heavy civil construction projects. Key Skills and Abilities Experience with tunnel boring machines (TBM). Possession of OSHA certifications. Relevant safety certifications (e.g., CSP, CHST). The salary range for this position is $125,000 – $160,000, and actual salaries vary based on experience, education, budget, internal equity, project, and location.
