The Role

Reporting to the Chief Nursing Officer, the Director is responsible for planning, implementing and promoting the nursing standards and ensuring high quality, individualized patient care for assigned clinical areas, consistent with the philosophy and objectives of the Medical Center. Will oversee progressive care, outpatient wound care, med-surge, nursing office and float pool departments.

  • Attends and successfully completes general and department orientation, in-service programs and the annual key competencies and mandatory update requirements.

• Identifies and establishes unit goals that are consistent with the Medical Center's values and strategic plans; develops strategies for achieving goals; develops and implements unit policies and procedures to support the provision of high quality, individualized patient care; assures standards comply with accepted professional and regulatory requirements.
• Accurately prepares and analyzes unit capital, labor and operating budgets. Establishes both long and short term goals; remains within an acceptable variance of the unit's budget; documents, justifies and corrects negative variances, as warranted; communicates budgetary information to the staff; monitors FTE and operating budget variances on a daily/monthly basis to ensure optimum productivity and utilization of human and material resources; implements prudent measures to reduce operating costs while maintaining productivity and high quality of service.
• Establishes and maintains high quality standards and performance expectations of all staff; demonstrates willingness to test new ideas; continuously assesses performance and identifies opportunities to improve upon the quality of care and service rendered by the unit; supports and empowers staff members to improve the quality of patient care; utilizes positive organizational and group dynamics to facilitate the change process; demonstrates and promotes a collaborative approach with other units to assure the smooth integration of services.
• Serves as a patient advocate and clinical resource in the coordination and delivery of patient care; assures adherence to approved practices, procedures and standards of care; assures complete and accurate documentation of the nursing process for each patient; communicates, negotiates and resolves patient care issues appropriately and effectively with all members of the healthcare team.
• Ensures the ethical management of all clinical and managerial situations, assuring patient rights, confidentiality and privacy.
• Effectively manages the human resources of the unit. Assures adequate staffing and skill mix for provision of services; appropriately interviews, hires, reviews, promotes, transfers and separates personnel; provides disciplinary action that is fair, objective, developmental and timely; monitors performance improvement plans for staff, as needed; delegates assignments appropriately based on individual levels of competence.
• Assures ongoing competence of all staff by monitoring their clinical performance and provides opportunities for growth activities and opportunities through training and education of unit personnel. Develops, implements and evaluates job-specific orientation and training programs; identifies educational needs of staff; provides educational opportunities based on identified need; promotes the personal and professional development of staff and colleagues; presents and discusses hospital changes with staff members as appropriate; stimulates teamwork and fosters commitment to clinical excellence.
• Develops, implements and evaluates quality control and improvement measures which are fiscally responsible.
• Keeps informed of current trends and updates in practice by actively participating in the provision of educational programs.
• Ensures an adequate stock of supplies and proper functioning of equipment. Is able to use all patient care equipment in the area.
• Demonstrates knowledge of age-specific care, including but not limited to identifying the need for additional safety measures, physiological normal values/readings, and assessing skin integrity, behavior, motor skills and/or activities that place patients at risk, as well as communicates effectively in a clear, concise, understandable manner. Applicable for the populations Infant, Pediatric, Adult, and Geriatric.
• Meets monthly budget targets in wage (SWB) and non-wage (OCE) as well as productivity standards for the respective department/departments on an ongoing basis.
• Directs maintenance of departmental facilities, equipment, supplies and materials in a condition to promote efficiency, health, comfort, and safety of patients and staff.
• Maintains required unit records, reports, and statistics for administrative purposes and budget preparation.
• Reviews trends in acuity data regularly and ensures that acuity is used in staffing.

What You’ll Bring

Education & Credentials

• Bachelor's Degree in Nursing.
• Master's Degree in Nursing, or related field (preferred).
• Required upon hire: California Registered Nurse License (Vendor Managed).
• Within 30 days of hire: California Fire and Life Safety Card - National Organization (Vendor Managed).

Experience & Expertise

• Experience in a Magnet Designated organization in a leadership role (preferred).
• 3 years of progressive management experience in the field of expertise.
• 5 years of experience in an acute care setting.

Professional & Leadership Capabilities

• Ability to deal with multiple priorities and short time frames.

The full pay range is listed in accordance with applicable law. Final compensation will be determined based on qualifications, experience, organizational compensation alignment, and the approved hiring department budget for the position. This position may also be eligible for incentive compensation and benefits.

The successful candidate's placement on the wage range for this position will be determined based upon relevant job experience and other applicable factors. These amounts are the base pay range; additional compensation may be available for this role, such as shift differentials, standby/on-call, overtime, premiums, extra shift incentives, or bonus opportunities.
