Academic Advisor
The Academic Advisor will be responsible, under indirect supervision, to retain and enroll prospective, former and current students. The Academic Advisor will be responsible for advising students in the development of educational, career and transfer plans; assisting in registering students each term; reviewing degree audits and graduation plans; as well as taking part in high school group visits and visit days; and assist in implementing retention strategies. The Academic Advisor will follow up with prospective students in specific program areas. The Academic Advisor is expected to stay current with requirements for programs and current transfer institution requirements. Regular, ongoing communication with students will be expected. Student referrals to other support services is common. The individual must possess the ability and desire to work as a team member. The Academic Advisor must exercise independent judgement as well as work cooperatively with College personnel and the general public.
Examples of Duties
Constant (67-100%)
- Serve as an academic advisor in all phases of advising and goal achievement, and in the skills needed to develop an academic plan, leading to completion and graduation.
- Provide detailed information to students concerning program requirements, transfer requirements, curriculum choice, course selection, and enrollment.
- Follow-through the recruitment process by communicating and visiting with prospective students and parents.
- Keep accurate records for all communication with all students in Colleague.
- Work with students to register for classes.
- Participate in assigned departments recruitment and retention plans.
- Cross-train in all majors and programs
- Assist in all retention activities.
- Contact all student's on Advisee Summary list and document appropriate advising notes.
- Attend staff meetings and training sessions, work in cooperation with other college departments, and serve on appropriate committees.
- Immediately report concerns about students to the Advising Director.
Frequent (34-66%)
- Assist with the coordination of orientation, visit days, and any other high school campus recruitment activities.
- Manage current students who have not enrolled for the following semester.
- Assist with the day-to-day operation of the Advising Center.
- Assist with promotional activities within the assigned division.
- Assist with the development and/or revision of printed promotional materials.
- Review transfer institution requirements and keep transfer plans and tip sheets up to date.
- Replacement of students in courses if they were not successful. Documentation of all students is required.
Occasional (10-33%)
- Department Calling in the evenings
- Visit Earlybird classes within assigned area.
- Serve on college committees as assigned.
- Attend meetings to represent the college and/or the assigned departments/division.
- Assist in the maintenance and enhancement of communications within the college and the community.
- Refer students and graduates seeking employment to the Career Center.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.

- Establish and maintain good working relationships with faculty, staff, administrators, clients, and general public.
- Possess strong human relation skills.
- Be willing to travel.
- Possess basic computer skills.
Qualifications
Associate's Degree required, Bachelor's Degree preferred.
Previous work experience related to the job responsibilities highly recommended.
Must possess good communication and organizational skills.
Must be detail oriented and work as a team member.
