Instructional Designer

Job Summary Under the general supervision of the Dean of Online Learning, this position supports faculty in the design and development of courses in all modalities that are engaging and accessible to a highly diverse student population. The successful applicant will work with a collaborative team to develop, implement, and facilitate onboarding and professional learning that supports innovative and culturally responsive teaching. Responsibilities include providing technical support related to Canvas and other integrated educational technology, assisting with learning management system administration, integrating third‑party applications, and applying emerging technologies in collaboration with faculty. Definition Assists faculty in the design, development and delivery of learning modules and coursework utilizing principles of good instructional design, pedagogical theory, and practice. Develops, implements, and facilitates training programs to help faculty apply learning theory and practice, performs specialized technical duties related to curriculum design and analysis, provides technical support to system users, and performs related duties as assigned. Supervision Received and Exercised Receives general supervision from assigned management personnel. Exercises no supervision of staff. Class Characteristics Provides professional consultation in the training, development, and design of curriculum. Requires full knowledge of all procedures related to the area of responsibility, working independently with judgment, tact, and initiative. Typical Functions Provides support to faculty in developing and maintaining technology‑based curricula; recommends effective uses of technologies to enhance instruction. Provides technical assistance to system users and trains staff on maintenance of curriculum support, coding, and other related computer systems. Performs specialized duties in creating, converting, and maintaining web‑based courses. Works with staff, faculty, and administrators to develop and implement training programs on web‑based course development and technology‑mediated instruction. Researches and improves instructional delivery methods and operations. Assists faculty with accessibility compliance requirements for online courses and digital content. Collaborates with departmental staff and participates in required meetings. Analyzes learning needs of students; develops instructional curriculum to meet those needs. Communicates with district staff, students, and outside agencies to coordinate activities and resolve issues. Assists with assessment efforts and compiles information on specialized topics related to programs. Assists in organizing and coordinating conferences and technology programs. Incorporates multimedia instructional content using sound design and pedagogical principles. Assists with learning management system administration and third‑party integration. Creates documentation on internal procedures and prepares reports. Applies emerging technologies, researching and improving instructional delivery methods. Performs related duties as assigned. Qualifications Knowledge of Instructional design principles, universal design, UI design, and andragogy. Accessibility compliance regulations. Learning needs analysis in course design and training development. Web‑conferencing systems, synchronous and asynchronous collaboration software. Online teaching technologies, including Canvas and Moodle. Best practices and current research in technology use in instruction. Research and reporting methods, techniques, and procedures. Data collection and report preparation practices. Applicable Federal, State, local, and district policies and procedures. Computer equipment and applications: word processing, web editing, database, spreadsheet, HTML. Record‑keeping principles and procedures. English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation. Customer‑service techniques for diverse students, faculty, and staff. Ability to Demonstrate sensitivity to diverse backgrounds of students, faculty, and staff. Maintain current knowledge of technological and pedagogical advancements. Interpret and explain applicable policies and regulations. Conduct research, analyze data, and present findings effectively. Establish and maintain positive working relationships. Compose basic reports and correspondence independently. Enter and retrieve data accurately and efficiently. Maintain filing, record‑keeping, and tracking systems. Organize work, set priorities, and meet deadlines. Operate modern office equipment and software. Use English effectively in verbal and written communication. Review situations accurately and determine appropriate actions using judgment. Minimum Qualifications Understanding and sensitivity to diverse backgrounds of the college community. Combination of training and experience providing support for curriculum development using online technologies; typically a four‑year degree in educational technology or related field plus two years experience. Graduate degree preferred. Preferred Qualifications Understanding of culturally responsive pedagogies. High comfort level with Canvas LMS. Experience as a Canvas administrator. Experience using Instructure’s Impact software. Experience with DesignPlus. Expert knowledge of WCAG 2.1 AA accessibility standards. Interest in emerging technologies. Experience designing using UDL and backward design principles. Comfort managing multiple projects simultaneously. Licenses and Certifications None. Physical Demands Requires mobility for standard office tasks, vision to read printed materials and computer screens, hearing and speech for communication.
