Recreation Specialist I/II- Gymnastics Instructor

Job Overview Part‑time temporary Recreation Specialist I (starting $16.32/hr) or II (starting $18.46/hr). The City of El Cajon seeks gym instructors to teach beginning, intermediate and advanced classes for children through senior adults. Candidates should be strong role models and leaders with experience in gymnastics, tumbling, and/or cheer, and enjoy working collaboratively with fellow Recreation Specialists to provide a positive, successful learning environment. Position Description Recreation Specialist Instructors perform a full range of duties as assigned, working independently while exercising judgment and initiative. They lead classes independently, adjust to new or unusual situations, and are fully aware of operating procedures and policies. They may be assigned to various roles throughout the city, including: Front office staff at recreation facilities Gymnastics / tumbling / cheer class instructor Day camp leader Special event staff Additional instructional classes and program leaders Typical duties include: Directing and supervising participants of recreation programs Spotting participants and following skill progression guidelines Planning, organizing, and instructing classes within established guidelines Maintaining records pertinent to programs Implementing age‑appropriate activities and events Ensuring the health, welfare, and safety of participants Working closely with the Recreation Supervisor to ensure program success through preparation, execution, and evaluation Assisting staff in organizing and cleaning facility areas and equipment Establishing and maintaining relationships with parents, community‑center staff, and other key individuals Maintaining a fun and positive attitude daily to create a happy environment Other duties as assigned Desired Skills & Qualifications Knowledge of recreational activities Creative and innovative approach to recreation programs Excellent customer service and communication skills Ability to work with children and/or adults and give effective guidance Ability to support health and well‑being of all participants and staff Able to take direction and initiative Ability to establish cooperative working relationships Emergency situation assessment and decisive action; clear, concise communication Basic computer skills Flexible work schedule (morning, evening, weekends, holidays) Special Requirements Hold valid CPR card and First Aid certificate Provide means to commute between work sites, possibly using personal vehicle Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Class C California driver’s license with a safe driving record Ability to lift and move up to 20 lb Benefits This position is part‑time and does not receive benefits beyond participation in the appropriate retirement plan: Nationwide or CalPERS. The City contributes 7.5% of salary to the Nationwide retirement plan. Eligible part‑time employees may also be enrolled in CalPERS.
