Position Number 014154, 004270, 013160 Functional Title Police Officer Position Type Law Enforcement Officers Position Eclass LN-EHRA LEO Non-Exempt Primary Purpose The primary purpose of the UNC Greensboro Police Officer position is to protect and serve the students, faculty, staff and visitors of the University through law enforcement and crime prevention. The officer will patrol campus, investigate complaints and violations of state laws and local ordinances using a community‑oriented policing philosophy, develop and implement preventative patrol techniques, and perform specialized duties to deter crime and promote effective safety and security practices. Position Summary Police officers perform law enforcement work at a university campus or state facility. With full powers of arrest, officers enforce state and federal laws. Duties include patrolling an assigned area, responding to complaints or calls, apprehending violators, investigating violations or complaints, collecting and preserving evidence, testifying in court, and performing related work. Officers may serve as patrol officers, detective squad members, crime prevention officers, or lead officers on assigned shifts. Police Officer Levels Police Officer Trainee : Applicants who do not meet the minimum requirements for a Police Officer I, or who are currently in basic law enforcement training, may be considered. Positions require successful completion of BLET and certification from the NC Law Enforcement Training and Standards Commission. Salary: $39,462 – $47,297. Police Officer I : Entry‑level 0–2 years of experience. Requires probationary certification from the NC Criminal Justice Education Training and Standards Commission. Salary: $51,660 – $55,338. Police Officer II : Fully functioning officers with at least two years of experience. Requires completion of BLET and a general certification. Salary: $54,243 – $58,105. Police Officer III : Veteran officers with four or more years of experience. Requires BLET and intermediate certification. Salary: $56,995 – $61,010. Minimum Qualifications High school diploma or GED. Probationary certification from the NC CJETSC as a commissioned police officer and successful completion of the agency’s field training program. Additional Required Certifications Valid driver’s license. Preferred Qualifications Minimum 20 years of age at appointment. Pass physical and psychological requirements of the NC Criminal Education and Standards Commission, including exams and drug test. Must hold a valid North Carolina driver’s license; pass background investigation with no felony convictions, psychological testing, drug screening, and physical. Successfully complete university orientation and a twelve‑week department field training program during probation. Communicate orally and in writing and interact professionally with the public and criminal justice representatives. Essential emergency duty employee; required to report to work on schedule or when notified during emergencies. Special Physical/Mental Requirements Subdue resisting suspects and effect forcible arrest. Defend oneself. Operate law‑enforcement vehicle. Pursue fleeing suspects. Perform searches of people and buildings. Exercise independent judgement. Apply appropriate use‑of‑force options. Comprehend legal documents, such as citations, affidavits, and warrants. Command emergency personnel at accidents, emergencies, and disasters. Work day and night shift assignments. Campus Security Authority Responsibilities The position is designated a Campus Security Authority under the Clery Act. The officer reports Clery crimes to the Clery Compliance Coordinator and completes annual training on reporting responsibilities. Problem Solving and Decision Making – Apply knowledge of laws, reason through problems in routine and high‑risk situations. Community Policing – Address crime prevention, community relations, and lead community programs.
