Role Description The Shelter Veterinarian is a full-time, on-site position located in Rochester, NY, providing clinical and preventive care for animals in the City's animal services or shelter facilities. Day-to-day responsibilities include performing physical examinations, diagnosing and treating illnesses and injuries, developing and overseeing vaccination, parasite control, and disease-prevention protocols, and conducting spay/neuter and other surgical procedures. The role involves monitoring animal health, maintaining accurate medical records, and ensuring adherence to humane care standards, public health regulations, and shelter medicine best practices. The Shelter Veterinarian collaborates closely with animal care staff, behavior teams, and administrative personnel, advises on animal intake and adoption decisions, and may assist with community outreach, education, and support for animal welfare initiatives. The position also includes participation in policy development, quality improvement, and training of staff on safe handling and basic medical procedures. Qualifications Clinical veterinary skills, including small animal medicine, surgery (especially spay/neuter), diagnostics, and preventive care in a shelter or high-volume setting. Knowledge of shelter medicine, animal welfare standards, zoonotic disease control, and public health regulations relevant to municipal or community animal services. Strong skills in medical record-keeping, use of veterinary practice software, and accurate documentation to support compliance and continuity of care. Effective communication and collaboration skills for working with multidisciplinary teams, educating staff and the public, and counseling adopters and animal guardians. Ability to manage a dynamic caseload, prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment, and make sound, compassionate decisions under pressure. Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM or equivalent) from an accredited institution and a current license (or eligibility for licensure) to practice veterinary medicine in New York State.
