Job Description: Patient Population: The patient population served includes all patients, including geriatric, adult, adolescent, pediatric, and newborn. This also includes services that affect facility staff, physicians, visitors, vendors, and the general public. Position Summary: Under the general direction of the Unit Director, Clinical Manager, and Charge Nurse, the RN independently provides holistic, individualized care using the Nursing Process for patients routinely seen on the unit. The RN demonstrates an advanced level of clinical competency, nursing judgment, teaching skills, and a commitment to improving the quality of patient care. The RN independently performs general and unit‑specific clinical skills and contributes to the Sierra View Medical Center Department of Patient Care Services and the nursing profession in a positive manner. The RN is responsible for the assessment, treatment, or care appropriate to the ages of the patients served. The RN demonstrates the ability to obtain and interpret information in terms of the patient’s needs and possesses knowledge of growth and development. Work includes normal and scheduled hours, holidays, call‑backs, weeknights, weekends, and on‑call. The RN agrees to participate, as directed, in emergencies and community disasters during scheduled and unscheduled hours. As a designated disaster service worker, the RN is required to assist in times of need pursuant to the California Emergency Services Act. Education, Training, and Experience The RN must be licensed as a Registered Nurse in the state of California and maintain current BLS certification. The RN should have basic computer skills, the ability to read and interpret safety rules and procedure manuals, write routine reports and correspondence if required, and calculate medication dosages appropriate to the patient population served. Licensure and Certifications Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in California, BLS certification, and ACLS certification or acquisition within six (6) months of assignment. Responsibilities and Essential Functions Responsibility for the assessment, treatment, and/or care appropriate to the ages of patients served. Utilizes holistic assessment skills to recognize subtle or abnormal signs and symptoms involving patient, significant other, discharge, psychosocial, biophysical, environmental, and teaching needs. Identifies nursing diagnosis and interdependent nursing problems and selects applicable nursing care standards to guide patient care. Ensures that the Care Plan is specific and unique to each patient utilizing Interdependent Nursing Standards and discharge needs of complex/multi‑system patients. Safely performs nursing care, including medication administration, equipment troubleshooting, and clinical problem‑solving per established clinical policy, procedure, and standards. Ensures nursing care is consistent with the established Nursing Plan of Care, the Medical Plan of Care, and patient ages served. Evaluates and communicates the effectiveness of the Plan of Care through exchange reports; makes recommendations for future care. Communicates evaluation of, or changes in, patient status to the physician or healthcare team as appropriate. Demonstrates adherence to the Joint Commission’s National Patient Safety Goals for Hospitals. Maintains documentation compliance with established hospital policies and procedures. Exhibits knowledge of role by adhering to NPSGs as related to area of practice. Understands the use, actions, and interactions of drugs used in combination for patients with multi‑system problems. Completes unit specific performance criteria checklists. Demonstrates proper Infection Prevention skills, including standard protocols for central lines and indwelling Foley catheters. Reports quality or risk‑management issues through appropriate authority lines. Maintains current knowledge of healthcare trends that affect clinical nursing practice on the unit. Shows standards of documentation in chart reviews; no letters of education remain in the file. Upholds all aspects of the Nursing Practice Act as defined by the California Board of Registered Nursing. Adheres to the ANA Code of Ethics for the nursing profession. Intensive Care Unit Specific Duties and Responsibilities Performs the role of ICU RN according to Sierra View Medical Center and Critical Care Services policies and procedures. Maintains ACLS certification. Completes a basic arrhythmia recognition class and maintains competency. Initiates measures to support patient survivability during life‑threatening events. Communicates patient needs to other care providers promptly. Shows knowledge of the chain of command for effective issue resolution at SVMC. Sets up ICU rooms properly to receive critically ill patients efficiently. Passes annual unit‑specific competencies. Arrives to work on time and attends shift huddle. Equal Opportunity Employer.
