Assistant Nurse Manager

The Assistant Nurse Manager position is located at the Overton Brooks VAMC in Nursing/Patient Care Services. The Assistant Nurse Manager (ANM) supports the Nurse Manager for the Operating Room (OR), Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU), and Same Day Surgery (SDS) unit in the planning, coordination, implementation, and evaluation of comprehensive nursing care for Veterans.

Responsibilities include:

• Providing clinical leadership, direction, and support to Registered Nurses, Licensed Vocational/Practical Nurses, Surgical Technicians, Nursing Assistants, and other assigned staff.
• Coordinating staffing assignments based on patient acuity, workload, staff competencies, and operational needs.
• Promoting safe, effective, evidence-based, and Veteran-centered nursing care.
• Serving as a clinical resource for staff and assisting with complex patient care situations and clinical decision-making.
• Assisting with patient flow, admissions, transfers, discharges, and coordination of care.
• Promoting patient safety and participating in quality improvement, performance improvement, and risk management activities.
• Monitoring compliance with nursing standards, VA policies, infection prevention practices, medication safety, and other patient safety requirements.
• Participating in employee orientation, competency assessment, education, mentoring, performance evaluation, and professional development.
• Assisting with recruitment, retention, employee recognition, and performance management activities.
• Promoting effective communication and collaboration among nursing staff, providers, Veterans, families, and interdisciplinary team members.
• Assisting with resolving patient concerns, staff issues, and operational problems.
• Supporting effective utilization of personnel, supplies, equipment, and other resources.
• Participating in unit meetings, councils, committees, policy development, and organizational initiatives.
• Assisting with preparation for inspections, accreditation activities, and regulatory reviews.
• Assuming delegated responsibilities and providing unit leadership in the absence of the Nurse Manager.
• Non-Supervisory ANM supports the NM with the operation of their designated unit(s).
• Providing coverage for other ANMs as needed.
• Responsible and accountable for the direction and oversight of specific orientation, training, development of staff, and evaluation of individual staff performance.
• Developing ability to function as a role model, educator, practitioner, and leader.
• Influencing care outcomes by collaborating with members of the interdisciplinary team to remove barriers and implement new evidence-based cutting-edge programs/processes.
• Drafting schedules and leave for final approval by the NM.
• Providing input into the performance of employees with the final evaluation completed by the NM.
• Assisting with making recommendations for selection of candidates for employment.
• Applying clinical knowledge/judgment to lead staff involvement in planning, decision-making, and evaluating outcomes; providing feedback to the NM who ultimately.
