Job Summary Working closely with the Closing Manager, the Assistant Closing Manager is responsible for providing leadership and direction within the club and driving club performance. The role oversees Recovery, Utility and Perishable departments, overnight prep, and ensures all areas are clean, stocked and ready for morning open. The Assistant Closing Manager also serves as Manager on Duty (MOD) as needed, driving operations, team leadership and member engagement during assigned shifts. A valid ServSafe Food Safety Certification and a forklift license are required; in Florida, a qualifier certification for retail propane oversight is required. Major Tasks, Responsibilities and Key Accountabilities Own end-of-day execution: oversee Recovery, Utility, and Perishable departments and overnight prep. Lead by presence: walk the floor during closing hours to observe execution and engage with members. Maintain GOLD standards through close: guarantee a GAA and Fast, Friendly, Full, Fresh, Clean experience until the last member exits. Ensure full-functioning departments through closing: validate registers, perishable stations, and service areas are operational. Support member issue resolution: personally resolve or elevate concerns during closing. Drive in-stock and freshness: monitor evening inventory, product rotation, culling, and merchandising execution. Enforce sanitation standards: confirm completion of cleaning checklists, sweep logs, waste pulls, and safety protocols. Lead recovery team productivity: coach Recovery and Utility Clerks for efficient task execution. Utilize tools effectively: leverage Hot List, NAFS, electronic reports, price sign reports, pallet tag usage, dashboards, and department-level reporting. Provide audit readiness: ensure sanitation, cold chain, and safety checklists are completed and fully compliant. Maintain equipment functionality: identify and raise issues with compaction, refrigeration, and cleaning equipment. Coach onboarding and certifications: reinforce ServSafe, PPE compliance and department-specific training. Improve underperforming areas: support bottom quartile departments and ensure follow-through on action plans. Collaborate cross-functionally: partner with Closing Manager, Assistant Club Managers, Club Manager, and Department Leads. Conduct quality and date checks: inspect products for expiration dates and condition. Utilize BJ’s MY WORK system: execute assigned tasks and ensure compliance with company initiatives. Perform other duties as assigned: provide operational support as directed by club leadership. Operate safely and efficiently: follow all safety protocols and procedures. Maintain regular, predictable, full attendance: demonstrate consistent presence. Qualifications 2 years of experience in retail, supermarket, or warehouse perishable operations preferred. Experience in managing inventory turnover and waste reduction strategies. ServSafe certification required. High school diploma required; college degree preferred. Basic computer proficiency (MS Word, Excel, Email) required. Open shift availability required. Must be at least 18 years of age. Job Conditions Frequent movement on hard surfaces and occasional bending, pulling, and reaching. Regular lifting of up to 30 pounds; occasional heavier lifting with assistance. Exposure to temperature extremes and loud noises within perishable areas. Potential exposure to cleaning agents. Must maintain all training and required certifications.
