Supervisory Health Science Specialist

Overview The Health Science Specialist position is established within the Office of the Associate Chief of Staff (ACOS) for Research, responsible for formulating the goals and objectives of the research program for the Dallas VA Medical Center and the broader VA North Texas Healthcare System. Responsibilities The position is responsible for initiating policies, procedures, and organizational structures necessary to achieve stipulated goals broadly related to building a health services and implementation research program. Qualifications Basic Education Requirement: You must possess a bachelor's or higher-level degree that includes a major field of study or specific course requirements related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of this position. The degree must be from an accredited program recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. (Copy of transcripts required at time of application). Specialized Experience: You must possess one (1) year of specialized experience, equivalent to the next lowered level in Federal service, that equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities needed to successfully perform the duties of the position. This includes directly supervising scientist investigators, statisticians, database managers, research coordinators, and research staff conducting health services and implementation research; evaluating the science and justification of scientific research project proposals; and performing as a Primary or Principal Investigator (PI) on grants related to health sciences, including implementation, communication, and public health, to develop interventions and improve access to healthcare. Experience Requirements: All experience, including volunteer or part-time, must include month and year start and end dates, and must be described with the nature of duties and number of hours per week. Assessment Process Applicants must complete a Supervisory Situational Judgment Test (SSJT) as part of the assessment process. The SSJT evaluates judgment and decision-making skills that align with relevant competencies, organizational values, and best practices. It is not timed, but is expected to take approximately 45 minutes or less. No cut score is required; all items must be answered. Physical Requirements The work is sedentary, typically with periodic walking to and from the Research building to the main hospital and clinics, standing, bending, and carrying light items such as files, binders, books, etc. No special physical demands are required to perform the work.
