Job Description Medical Laboratory Scientist II – Royal Oak, MI (Monday to Friday, 2:30 PM–11:00 PM, with rotational weekends) Perform test procedures of moderate/high complexity requiring the exercise of independent judgement and responsibility in those specialties in which you are qualified by education, training and experience. Employees may be eligible to receive a shift differential of 10% for some or all hours worked on second shift and 15% for some or all hours worked on third shift. Additional details on shift differential will be provided if an offer is extended. Provide support in quality control, troubleshooting complex problems, customer support, instrument and equipment maintenance, staff training, process improvement, and special projects as assigned. Perform and report assigned analytical tests in accordance with SOPs, ensuring quality control requirements are met. Support and comply with laboratory policies for specimen handling and processing, test analysis, reporting, and record maintenance. Adhere to analytical schedules to maintain turnaround time for results, including STAT or critical results. Ensure reagents/test kits have received dates, expiration dates, and, if applicable, opened dates. Perform and document QC analysis to ensure accuracy of clinical data and proper instrument function; make quality control decisions regarding assay or test disposition. Inform supervisory personnel of all problems affecting test procedures. Report any actual or potential deviation from standard testing procedures and cooperate fully with investigations. Enter test results into the Laboratory Information System for standardized reporting to physicians. Maintain laboratory areas and equipment in a safe, functional, and sanitary condition. Complete training and competency checklists as appropriate. Assist the supervisor with training of other laboratory personnel. Adhere to CLIA, HIPAA, OSHA, and laboratory safety requirements. Use personal protective equipment, engineering controls, and/or work practice controls as directed. Answer questions from clients or other lab personnel, if applicable. Participate in government or regulatory agency inspections, if needed. May assume lead responsibilities in the absence of a supervisor if qualified and delegated. Other duties as assigned; this is not an exhaustive list of all duties. Qualifications Required: One year full‑time experience or training (high complexity testing) in a clinical laboratory setting. Preferred: Minimum of 3 years clinical experience with most current year in present department. Physical and Mental Requirements: Lifting requirements, standing at bench, frequent walking, manual dexterity with pipettes and instruments. Knowledge: Comprehensive theoretical and operational knowledge in designated specialty; knowledge of policies and procedures; BS/BA in Medical Technology, Chemistry, or Biology or associate degree in Laboratory Science or Medical Technology; compliance with state licensing requirements. Skills: Proven leadership and problem‑solving skills; detail‑oriented, independent, multitask; interpersonal, communication, confidentiality; proficiency in MS Office and Laboratory Information Systems. Education: Associate’s Degree in Laboratory Science or Medical Technology (preferred); Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Technology, Biology or Chemistry (preferred). Licenses & Certifications: ASCP Certification (preferred).
