Sheriff's Inventory Management Assistant I/II/III

The Position Under immediate (I), general (II), and limited supervision (III), the inventory management assistant performs manual and clerical work required for the operation of the Sheriff’s Inmate commissary, including receiving, transporting, stocking, issuing, inventorying, assembling, packaging, and record‑keeping. The positions are located at the Todd Road Jail Facility in Santa Paula and involve inventory management and delivery of inmate commissary supplies for all detention facilities. There are currently four vacancies (part‑time/full‑time). Requirements: repetitive work in a jail setting, detail oriented, accurate record‑keeping, basic keyboard/computer knowledge, cooperative relationships with coworkers, vendors, users, efficient under pressure, adaptability, stand for three hours, push a heavy rolling cart throughout facilities. Hours may vary and may include evenings and weekends; assignment to any Ventura County jail facility. Levels: Inventory Management Assistant I (entry‑level), II (journey), III (advanced). Described roles and duties below. Level I Responsibilities Data entry, document retrieval, records maintenance, copying and scanning. Use of computer and inventory management systems and Microsoft Word. Transport large carts with commissary products. Operate box truck and other transport equipment. Receive items and verify quantity and quality. Label and store items to prevent damage/spoilage. Maintain clean working area/warehouse. Maintain inventory records and process inmate kites. Repair minor equipment or send to vendor. Perform other related duties as required. Level III Additional Duties Plan, organize, and assign work of lower‑level assistants. Train/direct inmate workers on commissary procedures. Serve as a resource person for vendors and users. Provide oral and written reports to supervisors. Maintain control records and update price lists, catalogs, inventory master files. Determine inventory levels, reference catalogs, locate vendors. Perform other duties as required. Education, Training, and Experience Level I: One year clerical experience or six months clerical trainee. Level II: One year clerical experience plus one year inventory control, storekeeping, or warehousing; or six months as Level I. Level III: One year clerical experience plus two years inventory control, storekeeping, warehousing; or one year as Level II. Necessary Special Requirements Valid California driver license. Must lift/carry/move up to 75 pounds with assistance. Must stand for long periods on concrete floor. Must have direct/indirect exposure to inmates and move through secure facilities. Working Conditions May include noise, dust, fumes, machinery or contagious diseases requiring safety precautions. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of inventory management principles, supplies, equipment, basic storeroom methods, computer keyboard functions, packaging methods, safety rules. Computer skills: Microsoft Office, VCIJIS, other inventory systems. Abilities: read catalogues and parts lists, organize stock, perform repetitive work, maintain accurate records, lift and move items 50‑75 pounds, operate safety equipment, write reports, plan, schedule, coordinate work, establish working relationships.
