Fishery Biologist 3/4 (Upper Cook Inlet Area Management Biologist- PCN

Job Summary Located in Soldotna, this position is open to Alaska residents only. The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Commercial Fisheries is recruiting a Fishery Biologist 3/4 to manage commercial fisheries in Upper Cook Inlet. What You Will Be Doing Lead management activities of commercial salmon, herring, razor clam, and smelt fisheries. Use sonar passage estimates, test fish CPUE data, aerial surveys, processor and fishermen catch reports, and historic catch and escapement trends to make in‑season decisions. Write and issue up to 60 emergency orders each season to establish fishing periods and designate open and closed areas in compliance with 11 management plans. Supervise an Assistant Area Management Biologist and a Program Technician and oversee the offshore test fishery. Working Environment The office is a moderately large area office in Soldotna with about 65 staff. Daily office work occurs in a single building; field work is conducted on the Gulf of Alaska, Prince William Sound, and Cook Inlet rivers. A shop and work area for field gear fabrication and vehicle upkeep are on site. Qualifications Bachelor's degree in biology or related field and at least one year of professional biologist experience in a comparable role. Experience in fisheries management, including authoring technical reports and participating in regulatory processes. Knowledge of aquatic life, population dynamics, habitat, and conservation. Strong stakeholder communication and supervisory skills. Ability to use sonar, CPUE data, aerial surveys and other data collection methods. Valid driver’s license, firearms proficiency, and First Aid/CPR certification. Special Notes Position may be filled at Level 3 or 4 depending on applicant training.
