Senior Title Underwriter & Business Development

Location: Richmond, VA Compensation: Base salary starting around $150,000+, with higher compensation available for candidates with significant experience and/or a meaningful book of business. Incentive compensation may also be available.

About the Opportunity

Direct Counsel is seeking a Senior Title Underwriter & Business Development professional to join a highly regarded Fortune 500 commercial real estate/title team in Richmond, Virginia. This role is ideal for an experienced title professional who combines strong underwriting expertise with client-facing relationship management and business development skills.

The position is primarily focused on underwriting and operational support, while also offering opportunities to contribute to client retention and business growth. Both attorney and non-attorney candidates with substantial title industry experience are encouraged to apply.

Key Responsibilities

Title Underwriting & Risk Management

• Review and analyze title searches, commitments, and policies for residential and/or commercial real estate transactions.
• Identify, evaluate, and resolve title defects, exceptions, and curative matters.
• Apply underwriting guidelines and risk management principles to transactions.
• Provide underwriting guidance and support to internal teams, agents, lenders, attorneys, and external partners.

Operations & Transaction Support

• Support the day-to-day operations of the Richmond office and assist in maintaining efficient transaction workflow from opening through closing.
• Collaborate with escrow, closing, and administrative teams to ensure accuracy, compliance, and timely execution.
• Assist with workflow optimization and operational continuity during periods of office transition and growth.

Client Relations & Business Development

• Serve as a trusted point of contact for clients, including attorneys, lenders, agents, and other industry partners.
• Maintain and strengthen existing client relationships through responsive communication and problem solving.
• Support business development initiatives by identifying opportunities that arise through underwriting and client interaction.
• Work with leadership to help retain, expand, and strategically develop business relationships and accounts.
• Candidates with an existing or developing book of business are encouraged to leverage and grow those relationships within the platform.

Qualifications

Required Experience

• 5+ years of experience in title underwriting, title operations, or related real estate/title practice.
• Strong experience handling complex title matters and curative issues.
• Ability to operate independently with minimal training in a fast-paced environment.

Preferred Background

• Experience in Virginia title markets and surrounding regions preferred.
• Attorney candidates with real estate/title experience are welcome to apply.
• Non-attorney senior title professionals with significant underwriting and operational expertise are also encouraged to apply.
• Existing relationships with local agencies, law firms, lenders, or commercial real estate professionals are a plus.
• Prior exposure to client development, account management, or business generation is advantageous.
