Operations Manager

Reports to : Director of Finance and Operations Salary : $53,000 – $58,000 (commensurate with experience) The Maine Center for Public Interest Reporting (MCPIR), which publishes The Maine Monitor, is a nonprofit news organization reporting on issues of public interest in the state of Maine. Founded in 2009, MCPIR has grown in size and impact, employing 19 and publishing daily and weekly newsletters. We have quadrupled our staff and increased our newsletter subscribers by more than 200% over the last four years. In addition to The Maine Monitor, which produces critical investigative and in-depth accountability journalism on issues of statewide importance, since November 2025, we produce Monitor Local, a division of The Maine Monitor focused on providing civic news for rural communities across Maine. The Maine Monitor’s reporting is widely respected for its depth and insights, winning local and national awards. Due to this robust growth and anticipated expansion in the near future, we are seeking to hire our first Operations Manager . About the role The Operations Manager will play a key role at MCPIR as part of the administrative team, reporting to the Director of Finance and Operations to oversee operational and administrative systems needed to support strategic objectives for the organization, with a particular focus on human resources. Working with the Director of Finance and Operations, the Operations Manager will ensure that our mission-driven work runs smoothly, efficiently and with the highest level of integrity. The position requires periodic in-person presence at the organization’s office in Augusta, but otherwise can be done remotely in Maine. This is a full-time, salaried, exempt position with scheduling flexibility, and offers full health, dental, vision and retirement benefits. Specifically, this role is responsible for: Streamlining processes, maintaining standard operating procedures and implementing improvements to enhance operational efficiency. Implementing and maintaining technology tools (e.g., CRM systems, project management software) to streamline workflows. Managing and approving employee reimbursements for travel and other expenses. Assisting in development of project budgets for use in grant proposals, fundraising and grant reports. Creating processes and issuing invoices for payments. Human Resources and Operations duties Overseeing the organization’s administrative and operational processes, with a goal of continuously developing and improving systems. Managing recruitment of staff, soliciting requirements from the leadership team, promoting available positions and managing evaluation and selection process. Overseeing onboarding and orientation of new employees. Maintaining and updating employee handbooks. Partnering with DFO and the rest of the management team to ensure the organization is focused on its mission while maintaining the work culture that makes MCPIR unique. Overseeing freelance contributor contracting. Managing and continuously improving the employee evaluation system, including annual employee goals and evaluation. Overseeing administrative functions as well as facilities to ensure efficient and consistent operations as the organization grows. Qualifications we’re looking for: Three to five years of experience in nonprofit administration, business management, human resources, executive support or similar roles. College degree in relevant field. Excellent task and project management skills. Customer-service mindset and solutions-focused in working with colleagues, vendors, partners, subscribers, and donors. Willingness to anticipate future needs, develop and test creative solutions, learn from tests and integrate lessons learned. Enthusiasm for the organization’s mission. Attention to detail and a strong commitment to data integrity. Demonstrated ability to use sound judgment and discretion regarding confidential information. Excellent organizational skills with the ability to prioritize a workload and multi-task while maintaining strict attention to detail. Ability to work both individually and in a team environment.
