Position Summary The Human Rights Campaign, the nation’s largest LGBTQ civil rights organization, has an opportunity for an experienced, dynamic Director, National Campaigns to lead comprehensive 360-degree organizing efforts through a 50-State Strategy. This role requires a strategic leader with a passion for building people power and activating communities nationwide. The role is responsible for designing, implementing, and overseeing nationwide campaigns, using both c3 and c4 resources, that unite diverse communities, mobilize volunteers, manage grasstops, engage allies and drive sustainable political change through innovative and integrated political and organizing strategies. This role, which is based in DC, is also responsible for managing Rapid Response opportunities both in DC and across the country as the need arises. The Director, National Campaigns will be responsible for leading a cross-organizational team of passionate and talented staff, with varying areas of expertise, to create dynamic and effective campaigns. The position manages a team and works alongside the regional and battleground states programs within the Campaigns and Communications division. This role owns the management of organization-wide campaigns, making sure that all of HRC’s departments and resources are leveraged to impact lasting change, and Rapid Response. The Director will be responsible for building out the infrastructure needed to scale the work and appropriately engage in c3 and c4 activity including but not limited to thinking about c3 to c4 conversions, building out a distributed organizing infrastructure and partnering with the data and analytics team on tools. In further building out and managing this 1-year old program, the Director will prioritize scale over control and test opportunities to provide supporters with toolkits to do work that is guided by but not directly managed by staff. Campaign opportunities will include but not be limited to planning and launching scaled tactics such as Days of Action, mass organizing and/or issue-based calls, rapid response actions in DC and across the nation, and engaging in Federal push-back campaigns. Position Responsibilities Nationwide Strategic Leadership: Lead the development and execution of comprehensive, multi-layered campaigns that drive LGBTQ+ equality across key issue areas, including issue fights, electoral and legislative battles, and driving inclusion in workplaces, schools and communities. Coordinate with internal partners to ensure a consistent, unified message and approach on individual campaign efforts. Set clear campaign goals and key performance indicators, continuously monitoring progress and adapting strategies to optimize impact. Represent HRC at key coalitions and tables to engage allies and share out campaign work. Organizing & Community Engagement: Lead efforts to activate supporters and allies through community outreach, town halls, rallies, volunteer-driven initiatives and other tactics. Build and maintain strategic relationships with community leaders, business leaders, local organizations, and influencers to foster broad-based engagement. Manage all aspects of Rapid Response actions, whether in DC or across the country, engaging the whole of the organization (including volunteers and staff), and ensuring HRC is visibly represented in the moment. Oversee and develop the resources for volunteer recruitment, training, and retention programs that empower local communities to take action. 360-Degree Campaign Execution: Integrate field organizing, digital outreach, advocacy communications, media relations and data analytics to create a holistic campaign approach. Collaborate with digital teams to design and implement online strategies that complement traditional organizing efforts. Manage and optimize resource allocation, including developing and managing the annual program budget, ensuring campaign efforts are cost-effective and impactful across all states. Team Leadership & Cross-Functional Collaboration: Recruit, mentor, and manage a high-performing team of campaign staff. Work closely with communications, policy, fundraising, membership, programs and data teams to ensure that all aspects of the campaign are aligned and mutually reinforced. Foster a culture of collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement within the campaign team and with internal partners. Data-Driven Decision Making: Utilize data analytics to track engagement, measure outcomes, and refine tactics in real time. Report regularly to senior leadership on campaign progress, challenges, and strategic adjustments. Leverage insights from diverse sources to continually evolve and enhance the campaigns’ grassroots impact. And other duties as assigned. Position Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Political Science, Communications, Public Administration preferred or equivalent experience At least 8 years of experience in substantially similar roles. At least five years demonstrated success managing staff with a focus on the professional growth of individual contributors. Experience managing remote staff is strongly preferred. Proven track record of leadership managing a 50-state organizing effort or similar large-scale campaign initiatives with a strong focus on grassroots mobilization. Deep understanding of organizing, voter outreach, and campaign strategy across diverse communities. Exceptional communication, interpersonal, and public speaking skills. Demonstrated ability to coordinate and manage complex, cross-functional projects. Strong analytical skills with experience in data-driven decision making and strategic planning. Commitment to building sustainable, community-driven political movements. Passion for LGBTQ+ equality, racial justice and equity, with an understanding of how intersecting identities impact LGBTQ+ individuals and communities. Experience with digital organizing tools and social media strategies that complement traditional grassroots efforts. Ability to inspire and motivate diverse teams and volunteers in a high-pressure, fast-paced environment. Proactive problem-solving skills and the flexibility to adapt to evolving political landscapes. Flexibility with work schedule including evenings and weekends. This position requires nationwide, overnight, multi-day and/or weekend travel, often with minimal notice. Travel averages 8-10 days/month.
