School Nurse

Public Health NurseReporting to the Nurse Supervisor, the Public Health Nurse is to provide optimal physical and emotional health of the school population through direct care, education, guidance, and consultation. This position is affiliated with the Fairfield Public Nurses Union.Evaluates the health and development status of pupils according to state, local, and agency policies via assessment screeningReports positive findings to parents and coordinates the referral and follow up processCounsels, develops and implements plans with pupils, parents and school personnel to eliminate, minimize or cope with health problems that interfere with optimal teaching or learningPromotes preventive health measuresProvides communicable disease control measures, including surveillance, monitoring and notificationServes as health consultant to school personnelParticipates in individual's school's planning and placement teamParticipates in classroom teaching or provides in-service programs for classroom teachers in appropriate subject areasProvides first aid for accidents and illnessProtects health and safety of school population by assessing environmental health factors and establishing plans for provision of emergency care for illness and injuryMaintains up-to-date, accurate health recordsAdministers medications according to State regulations, physician's orders and agency school health policyCarries out special procedures, e.g., intermittent catheterization, in accordance with physician's ordersProvides immunizations against preventable childhood diseasesAssists physician with health assessments done in school as needed.Participation in program development for specific problems at individual schoolsArrange for other health services available through school or community as necessaryOn-site orientation of new school nurses to the school health programHome visits for school-related problemsEducating school population to health facilities/systems in the communityAssist in orientation of new staff to school health programProvide situational experience and supervision to university students as neededIn schools where school health aides are assigned, the nurse is responsible for supervision of the school health aide. Supervision includes orientation, ongoing guidance and performance evaluationsPerforms other related duties as requestedQualificationsRegistered Nurse with Baccalaureate Degree in nursing or related field or Diploma/Associate Degree with at least 15 academic credits in required areas of studyMust have one (1) year of nursing experience within the last five (5) yearsSCHEDULEMonday – Friday, hours dependent upon assignmentAFFILIATIONMember of Unit #34 of AFT Nurses and Health Professionals Collective Bargaining UnitThe Town of Fairfield is an equal opportunity employer
