About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Registered Nurse - Stepdown to provide high-quality nursing care to patients who require closer monitoring than a general medical-surgical unit but may not require intensive care. The Stepdown RN will care for medically complex and moderately high-acuity patients, monitor cardiac and vital signs, administer medications and treatments, recognize changes in patient condition, and collaborate closely with physicians and the multidisciplinary healthcare team.

This opportunity is ideal for an experienced nurse who is comfortable managing patients with changing clinical conditions and working in a fast-paced intermediate-care environment.

Roles and Responsibilities

• Perform comprehensive initial and ongoing assessments of Stepdown patients
• Continuously monitor vital signs, cardiac rhythms, oxygen saturation, neurological status, and other clinical indicators
• Recognize and promptly report changes in patient condition
• Develop, implement, and evaluate individualized nursing care plans
• Administer medications, IV therapies, blood products, and other treatments according to provider orders
• Monitor telemetry and recognize abnormal cardiac rhythms
• Manage and monitor IV lines, central lines, drains, catheters, and other patient care devices
• Provide care for patients recovering from complex medical, surgical, cardiac, and respiratory conditions
• Monitor patients receiving oxygen therapy and other advanced respiratory support as applicable
• Assess pain levels and provide appropriate pain management interventions
• Monitor laboratory results and diagnostic findings and communicate significant changes to the healthcare team
• Assist physicians and other providers with bedside procedures and interventions
• Respond promptly to clinical deterioration and participate in emergency response and stabilization
• Maintain accurate intake and output and fluid balance records
• Provide wound care, dressing changes, and other treatments within scope of practice
• Assist patients with mobility, positioning, transfers, and activities of daily living
• Implement fall prevention, infection prevention, and other patient safety measures
• Educate patients and families regarding medications, treatment plans, recovery, and discharge instructions
• Assist with admissions, transfers, procedures, and discharges
• Maintain accurate and timely documentation in the electronic medical record
• Communicate effectively with physicians, RNs, respiratory therapists, technicians, and other healthcare professionals
• Follow medication safety, infection control, patient privacy, and hospital policies
• Support evidence-based practice, quality improvement, and patient safety initiatives

Qualifications

• Active Registered Nurse license eligible to practice in Michigan
• Minimum 2 years of recent Stepdown, PCU, Telemetry, ICU, or comparable acute care nursing experience
• Strong knowledge of intermediate and high-acuity patient care
• Experience with cardiac monitoring, telemetry, IV therapy, and medication administration
• Ability to recognize and respond quickly to changes in patient condition
• Strong clinical judgment, critical-thinking, and prioritization skills
• Excellent communication and multidisciplinary teamwork abilities
• Ability to manage multiple patients in a fast-paced environment
• Comfortable working 12-hour night shifts
• Required certifications should meet applicable facility requirements
