Position Title: Pharmacy Technician
Department: Pharmacy Operations
Reports To: Pharmacy Manager / Pharmacist-in-Charge
Classification: Hourly, Non-Exempt

Position Summary

The Pharmacy Technician plays an essential role in supporting pharmacists and providing excellent patient care within the pharmacy. This position assists with prescription processing, medication preparation, insurance billing, inventory management, and customer service while ensuring accuracy, efficiency, and compliance with all applicable pharmacy laws and regulations.

The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, dependable, compassionate, and committed to providing exceptional service to patients and supporting the pharmacy team.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Prescription Processing & Patient Care

• Receive and process prescription orders accurately and efficiently.
• Enter prescription information into the pharmacy system while maintaining attention to detail.
• Prepare prescription labels, fill prescriptions, package medications, and complete necessary documentation under pharmacist supervision.
• Assist pharmacists with medication preparation and workflow management.
• Provide friendly, professional, and respectful customer service to patients, caregivers, and healthcare providers.
• Answer phones, assist with patient questions, and direct clinical questions to the pharmacist.
• Assist patients with prescription pickup, payments, and general pharmacy needs.

Insurance & Billing Support

• Process prescription claims through insurance plans, Medicare, Medicaid, and other third-party payers.
• Troubleshoot rejected claims and assist with resolving billing issues.
• Obtain necessary information from patients and insurance providers when needed.
• Maintain confidentiality of patient information in accordance with HIPAA requirements.

Pharmacy Operations

• Maintain accurate patient profiles and prescription records.
• Assist with prior authorization requests and documentation as directed.
• Assist with medication synchronization, refill reminders, and other adherence programs.
• Support immunization services and other clinical programs as assigned.
• Maintain a clean, organized, and efficient pharmacy workspace.
• Follow all pharmacy policies, procedures, and quality standards.

Inventory Management

• Assist with receiving, checking, and stocking medication orders.
• Monitor inventory levels and communicate medication needs to pharmacy leadership.
• Rotate stock and assist with expiration date checks.
• Assist with inventory control procedures, including recalls and returns.
• Maintain proper storage and handling of medications and pharmacy supplies.

Cash Handling & Store Support

• Process customer transactions accurately.
• Handle payments and follow cash-handling procedures.
• Assist with maintaining the overall appearance and organization of the pharmacy.
• Complete assigned tasks and support daily pharmacy operations.

Compliance Responsibilities

• Follow all federal, state, and local pharmacy laws and regulations.
• Maintain current pharmacy technician registration/licensure as required by the State of Michigan.
• Follow HIPAA privacy and confidentiality requirements.
• Complete required training programs and continuing education as assigned.
• Follow company policies, procedures, and safety standards.
• Report concerns, errors, or safety issues promptly to pharmacy leadership.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Current Pharmacy Technician License or ability to obtain licensure within required timeframe.
• Strong attention to detail and ability to accurately complete tasks.
• Excellent customer service and communication skills.
• Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism.

Preferred Qualifications

• Previous retail pharmacy experience.
• Pharmacy Technician Certification (PTCB or NHA).
• Experience with pharmacy management systems.
• Experience processing insurance claims and resolving billing issues.

• Ability to prioritize multiple tasks while maintaining accuracy.
• Ability to communicate effectively with patients, coworkers, pharmacists, and healthcare providers.

Physical Requirements

The employee must be able to:

• Stand for extended periods of time.
• Walk, bend, reach, and lift as needed.
• Lift and carry pharmacy supplies and medication packages.
• Perform repetitive tasks including typing, counting, labeling, and computer entry.
• Use computers, phones, scanners, and other pharmacy equipment.

Work Environment

This position operates in a retail pharmacy setting and requires regular interaction with patients, healthcare professionals, and pharmacy staff. The employee must be able to work in a fast-paced environment while maintaining accuracy, professionalism, and excellent customer service.
