Project Engineer

Position Summary:We are seeking a technically skilled and highly organized Project Engineer – Steel Detailing to support the successful execution of structural and miscellaneous metals projects. This role serves as a key liaison between the detailing team, project management, fabrication, and erectors. The ideal candidate will oversee the flow of detailing information, coordinate drawing approvals, and ensure alignment between design documents and shop fabrication requirements.Essential Job Functions:Manage and coordinate the work of external detailing subcontractors to ensure high-quality shop and erection drawings are delivered on schedule.Manage the detailing budget for assigned projects, including tracking hours and costs, and identifying potential savings opportunities.Verify that all detail drawings conform to applicable industry codes, contract drawings, and project specifications.Oversee all aspects of the detailing process for assigned projects, including drawing production, checking, electronic file management, and bolt lists.Monitor drawing schedules proactively, anticipate potential delays or issues, and promptly communicate concerns to the Engineering manager, Project Manager, and other stakeholders.Identify and resolve detailing-related issues or recommend solutions, especially when fabrication nonconformance’s arise; escalate to the Engineering Manager as needed.Maintain organized and up-to-date project files documenting all drawing submissions, approvals, revisions, RFI’s, and fabrication packages.Review and validate change order requests from external detailing subcontractors for accuracy and completeness.Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:Excellent ability to coordinate the work of outside detailers on multiple projects at the same time.Excellent skills in leading or working as a member of a team.Excellent knowledge of AISC and AWS codes, shop fabrication and steel erection methods and processes, and general construction practices.Excellent knowledge and skill in the use of detailing software and good skills in using word processing, spreadsheet and email software.Superior skill and ability to communicate, document and resolve problems and questions in a clear and timely manner.Superior knowledge and skill to develop and maintain drawing schedules and hold teams accountable to meet schedules.Required Qualifications2-5 years of experience in steel fabrication, detailing coordination, or construction engineeringFamiliarity with detailing/modeling platforms such as SDS2, Tekla, or AutoCADAbility to read and interpret structural and architectural drawingsProficiency with MS Office and document control tools (Bluebeam, Procore, ShareFile, etc.)Preferred QualificationsAssociate or Bachelor’s in Construction Management, Engineering Technology, or related fieldUnderstanding of fabrication tolerances, field fit-up, and sequencing erectionAbility to perform basic model navigation and markups within BIM softwareExperience coordinating with or reviewing work from third-party detailersPhysical Demands:Stand OCCASIONALLY over the course of the 8 to 12 hour work shift.Walk OCCASIONALLY over the course of the 8 to 12 hour work shift. The distances walked will range from a distance of a few feet to several hundred feet.Sit FREQUENTLY to CONTINUOUSLY over the course of the 8 to 12 hour work shift.Lift weights up to 30 pounds OCCASIONALLY from floor to head level, which includes the various prints, books, binders, and papers utilized to perform the usual work duties.Lift weights up to 50 pounds RARELY to OCCASIONALLY from floor to chest level, which may include boxes of papers, books, etc.Carry weights noted above distances ranging from a few feet to several hundred feet. 50 pounds would be carried 50 feet. Lifting devices are available.Climb OCCASIONALLY onto steps or ladders.Stoop or crouch OCCASIONALLY while performing the regular job duties. Tasks would include looking in filing cabinets, removing supplies, and restocking paper in the copier. The position will be held continuously for a few seconds to a few minutes, depending upon task.Kneel OCCASIONALLY in the commission of job duties, depending upon the task.Crawl OCCASIONALLY up to 10 feet to plug in equipment, retrieve dropped materials, etc.Reach forward OCCASIONALLY to FREQUENTLY to perform job duties or to retrieve tools. The employee will OCCASIONALLY to FREQUENTLY be required to reach to full forward extension.Reach overhead OCCASIONALLY to retrieve books, supplies, etc.Push and pull drawers open OCCASIONALLY to FREQUENTLY to retrieve tools or supplies.Gross finger dexterity skills required operating the mouse utilized in the course of standard job duties. Fine finger dexterity is not required.Non-Material Handling DemandsEmployee is expected to work 40 hours a week. However, hours including overtime and weekends may be required based on Drake-Williams Steel’s needs.Hear sufficiently to be aware of safety issues.Visual ability to read and interpret material to satisfactorily do job.Exposure to heat, cold, wet and humid conditions OCCASIONALLY.Exposure to fumes, odors and dusts OCCASIONALLY.Exposure to solvents, greases, oils, and coolants OCCASIONALLY.Wear all required Personal Protective Equipment.
