General Information

Location: Tacoma, WA

Facility Type: Level II Trauma Center with a Level IV Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)

Total Beds: 60, including 21 Inpatient Holding, 2 Psychiatric Rooms, and 14 Hall Spaces

Average Daily Patient Volume: 140-150 patients

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Emergency Department Nurse to provide high-quality care to a diverse patient population, including pediatric to geriatric patients with a variety of medical conditions. This position requires a strong background in emergency care, with an emphasis on trauma patients and high-acuity cases.

Patient Types

• Trauma, including Gunshot Wounds (GSW)
• Sepsis

• Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA)
• Mental health issues
• Respiratory issues
• Chest pain

Patient Ratios

Standard nurse-to-patient ratio is 1:4, with the ability to flex to a ratio of 1:5 for low-acuity patients.

Required Certifications

• BLS
• ACLS
• PALS
• TNCC
• NIHSS
• CPI/MOAB
• Traveler Competency Exam

Required Skills

• General Emergency Department experience
• Cardiac rhythm interpretation
• IV skills and basic knowledge of medication administration
• Procedural sedation
• Blood administration
• Cardiac medications

Support on the Unit

• Emergency Room Tech for glucose checks and splinting assistance
• Charge Nurse who rarely takes an assignment
• Resource/Float Nurse (pending staffing)
• Respiratory Therapy available 24/7
• Emergency Department Educator
• Security for safety available 24/7
• House Supervisor available 24/7
• Pharmacy services available 24/7 to assist in codes

Charting System and Equipment

• Electronic Medical Record (EMR): Epic
• IV Pumps: Alaris
• Medication Dispensing System: Pyxis
• Central and bedside Telemetry monitoring at the nursing station; no telemetry tech available

Orientation and Training

• First day includes onboarding and Epic training (if needed), along with a meeting with the educator
• Followed by 3-4 shifts of direct training with a preceptor on assigned shifts
• Telemetry competency is required to be completed and passed prior to starting

Scheduling Details

• Shift options include days, mids, and evenings/nights
• Weekend rotation is every other weekend
• Time-off requests can be approved for up to 5 days
• Holiday expectation to work 3 of 5 major holidays (Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year's Eve, New Year's Day)
