Detailer Project Engineer

Full-time

What you'll do:

The Project Engineer – Detailer is responsible for producing accurate, complete, and technically compliant submittal packages for commercial door, frame, and architectural hardware projects. This role reviews contract documents, prepares opening schedules and hardware sets, coordinates product selections, processes revisions, and prepares approved projects for purchasing and fabrication. Working closely with Project Managers, Purchasing, Estimating, Vendors, Production, and Customers, the Project Engineer serves as the technical expert for commercial door, frame, and hardware detailing while ensuring projects are released accurately, on schedule, and in accordance with customer specifications and industry standards. Installation responsibilities are not included.

Project Engineering & Technical Detailing

  • Review architectural drawings, specifications, addenda, door schedules, hardware specifications, and awarded project scope
  • Produce accurate and professional commercial door, frame, and hardware submittal packages
  • Prepare opening schedules, hardware sets, product data sheets, door and frame elevations, and related technical documentation
  • Verify quantities, dimensions, handing, fire ratings, finishes, wall conditions, frame profiles, anchors, hardware functions, and special preparations
  • Coordinate compatibility between hollow-metal frames, hollow-metal doors, architectural wood doors, and commercial hardware
  • Ensure technical documentation complies with project requirements, applicable codes, and manufacturer recommendations

Contract & Document Review

  • Review construction documents to identify conflicts, missing information, substitutions, scope gaps, and potential cost impacts
  • Prepare Requests for Information (RFIs) and communicate technical questions to Project Managers and customers
  • Process customer review comments and prepare revised submittals accurately and efficiently
  • Maintain organized document control and revision history throughout the project lifecycle
  • Perform thorough quality-control reviews before issuing submittals or releasing material

Purchasing & Production Support

  • Prepare approved projects for purchasing and fabrication
  • Review vendor acknowledgments to ensure compliance with approved project requirements
  • Coordinate with Purchasing to ensure accurate material ordering
  • Support Production by providing complete and accurate fabrication information
  • Assist Project Managers with technical documentation throughout project execution
  • Maintain accurate project, opening, door, frame, and hardware information within company systems

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Partner with Project Management, Estimating, Purchasing, Production, Vendors, and Operations teams to ensure successful project execution
  • Communicate technical information clearly with internal departments and external project stakeholders
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives focused on detailing accuracy, quality, and workflow efficiency
  • Provide technical guidance regarding products, specifications, and detailing requirements
  • Perform additional duties as assigned

  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Architectural Technology, Engineering Technology, Drafting, or related field preferred
  • Minimum three years of detailing, project engineering, or submittal experience within the commercial doors, frames, and hardware industry
  • Demonstrated ability to prepare accurate, high-quality commercial submittals
  • Strong knowledge of hollow-metal frames, hollow-metal doors, architectural wood doors, and commercial hardware
  • Ability to read and interpret architectural drawings, specifications, door schedules, hardware sets, and manufacturer templates
  • Understanding of door handing, frame profiles, wall conditions, fire ratings, hardware preparations, and finish requirements
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Bluebeam or similar PDF markup software
  • Experience with Comsense Advantage preferred
  • DHI training or industry certifications are highly desirable
  • Knowledge of electrified hardware, access control systems, automatic operators, ADA requirements, life-safety codes, and fire-door regulations preferred
  • Primarily office-based environment
  • Frequent use of computers, construction documents, specifications, and drafting software
  • Regular collaboration with Project Managers, Purchasing, Vendors, Production, and Customers
  • Ability to sit for extended periods while reviewing drawings and preparing technical documentation
  • Occasional travel to customer meetings, manufacturing facilities, or project sites may be required
  • Ability to manage multiple concurrent projects while meeting customer deadlines
