Software Engineer, Online Giving

GiveCampus is the world's leading fundraising platform for non-profit educational institutions. Trusted by millions of donors and 1,300+ colleges, universities, and K-12 schools, our mission is to help advance the quality, the affordability, and the accessibility of education. At our current pace, we will facilitate $100 billion in charitable giving over the next decade–enough money to send more than 1 million students to college, tuition-free.

GiveCampus is backed by leading investors including Y Combinator, but we’re also practitioners of Sustainable Growth: we’ve made the Inc. 5000 list of America's fastest-growing private companies each of the last five years and we’ve been profitable nine of the last 10. In 2025, we celebrated a $140 million growth investment that included a major liquidity event for GiveCampus employees–the second in less than three years.

Our purpose-driven team of 130+ is located in 30+ states across the US: team members work from anywhere they choose. We have a beautiful 12,000sf office in Washington, DC that is available for people to use whenever they want, and we regularly organize team meet-ups, visit partner institutions, and host retreats in various locations.

While we operate at meaningful scale, we’re still small relative to the commercial and social good opportunities in front of us. Every GiveCampus employee plays a meaningful role in shaping what comes next, and we're growing the team in support of our ambitious plans–including a $100 million investment in AI product development. If you believe in the transformative power of education and want to join a fast-growing, mission-driven company, you’ll fit right in.

Location: This is a remote-first role based in the U.S. While we embrace flexible, distributed work, we also value in-person connection. Team members are expected to attend multiple company-wide and team-specific onsites throughout the year.

About the role

Every donation that moves through the GiveCampus platform passes through the Online Giving team's code. This team owns the giving experience itself: mobile-first Giving Forms and Giving Pages, payment processing across Stripe, ACH, and Digital Wallets, recurring giving, Memberships, and the tools schools use to build and personalize their fundraising campaigns.

We're looking for a Software Engineer to help build that work. You'll own features and small-to-medium projects within the pod, partner with your Tech Lead, Product Manager, and Designer to design solutions and break down the work, and ship code that schools depend on to fund scholarships, programs, and facilities. It's full-stack work where correctness genuinely matters—donations have to balance to the penny—and where a conversion improvement on a giving form translates directly into dollars raised for education.

Right now the team is migrating ACH payments to modern Stripe APIs, building a new block-based, API-driven campaign builder, growing Memberships out of beta, and shipping Smart Ask Amounts personalization that helps schools ask each donor for the right amount.

Online Giving is one of four cross-functional product teams in Engineering. We run Agile, mostly Scrum with one-week sprints, and we ship to production multiple times a day.

Our stack

• Ruby on Rails
• React
• Postgres and Redis
• Stripe, Spreedly, and PayPal for payment processing
• AWS with ArgoCD and Kubernetes for hosting and application management

What you'll do

• Build and maintain donor-facing giving forms, giving pages, and admin tools with a focus on conversion, accessibility, and mobile-first design.
• Build and harden payment flows—one-time, recurring, and memberships—across Stripe, ACH, and Digital Wallets, with reliability and observability in mind.
• Work across the full stack, from UI components to backend services to database queries and performance.
• Own features and small-to-medium projects end to end: technical design and work breakdown, coding, automated testing, deployment, and support in production.
• Partner closely with your pod's Tech Lead, Product Manager, Designer, and fellow engineers to turn user needs and business goals into technical solutions, and speak up early when you spot blockers or trade-offs.
• Participate actively in sprint planning, story scoping, and estimation, including thorough review of acceptance criteria.
• Write clean, well-tested, well-documented code, and give and receive thoughtful code review.
• Contribute to team initiatives like technical debt refinement and coding standards, and help teammates get unstuck.
• Participate in interviewing and onboarding as the team grows.
• Support the platform on a rotational basis, including team-based support and a paired 24/7 on-call rotation. Support work includes payment and deposit reconciliation, recurring-gift issues, reporting fixes, and partner configuration requests.

This role sits on a clear growth path. Engineers at this level who take on larger projects, deepen their architectural judgment, and start mentoring others grow into Senior Software Engineer roles on the team.

What we're looking for

• 3+ years of hands-on, real-world development experience.
• Full-stack proficiency: a modern front-end framework (React or Vue.js) plus a backend language and framework (Ruby on Rails, Node.js, Python, or similar). Rails and React experience is preferred.
• Experience contributing to technical design discussions and breaking down features into well-scoped, incrementally shippable work.
• Solid SQL database skills: schema design, query writing and optimization, and a real concern for data integrity.
• Experience building and integrating with RESTful APIs.
• A test-driven mindset: unit, integration, and end-to-end testing as part of how you build.
• Familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or similar) and CI/CD pipelines.
• Good debugging instincts, including in production, and the judgment to balance shipping quickly against long-term maintainability.
• Clear communication, comfort with ambiguity and shifting priorities, and genuine ownership of your work from conception through deployment and maintenance.
• A user-focused mindset: you think about how engineering decisions land for donors, school administrators, and fundraising results.

Bonus points if you have

• Payments experience: Stripe or a comparable platform, ACH, digital wallets, webhooks, idempotency and retries, reconciliation, or testing against third-party services. This is the single strongest signal for this team.
• Experience with Ruby on Rails and RSpec.
• Experience building consumer-facing checkout or donation flows.
• Experience on a fundraising, crowdfunding, fintech, or e-commerce product.
• Familiarity with caching, observability tooling, or triaging performance and stability issues.
• A good eye for intuitive, user-friendly front-end design.
