Data EngineerLocation: Chicago, IL – Remote Travel: Short-term travel may be requiredJob OverviewWe are seeking a skilled Data Engineer to automate a currently manual, Excel-based monthly data process. The ideal candidate will have strong hands-on experience with Python, SQL, Google BigQuery, and Power BI and be comfortable independently designing and implementing end-to-end data solutions.This role involves replacing manual CSV exports, spreadsheet formulas, reference-data lookups, and manual file distribution with an automated and scalable data pipeline.Key ResponsibilitiesDesign and develop automated data pipelines and ETL processes using Python.Automate manual Excel-based monthly data processing workflows.Replicate and improve spreadsheet lookup, matching, and reference-data logic programmatically.Extract and transform data from Google BigQuery.Write, optimize, and adapt SQL queries against cloud data warehouses.Schedule and automate data extracts and processing workflows.Generate output files programmatically to replace manual CSV and Excel processes.Build and maintain Power BI reports and dashboards.Connect Power BI reports to live or automated data sources to replace static Excel outputs.Analyze existing Excel and VBA-based processes and support their migration to automated solutions.Ensure data accuracy, consistency, and reliability throughout the automated workflow.Troubleshoot data pipeline, SQL, and reporting issues.Work independently across data engineering, automation, and reporting activities.Required SkillsStrong hands-on experience with Python for data engineering and automation.Strong SQL development and query-writing skills.Direct experience with Google BigQuery.Experience querying and scheduling data extracts from BigQuery.Hands-on experience building ETL/ELT pipelines.Strong experience with Power BI.Experience building and connecting live reports and dashboards.Experience automating manual data-processing workflows.Ability to work independently across multiple technologies and tasks.Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.Good communication and documentation skills.Preferred SkillsExperience with Excel automation.Familiarity with Excel VBA and macro-driven processes.Experience modernizing or replacing legacy spreadsheet-based workflows.Experience with cloud data warehouse environments.Experience generating automated CSV, Excel, or other output files.
