Senior Producer, Video (Trust) New York, NY
$145k - $170kNew York Times
The mission of The New York Times is to seek the truth and help people understand the world. That means independent journalism is at the heart of all we do as a company. It’s why we have a world-renowned newsroom that sends journalists to report on the ground from nearly 160 countries. It’s why we focus deeply on how our readers will experience our journalism, from print to audio to a world-class digital and app destination. And it’s why our business strategy centers on making journalism so good that it’s worth paying for. This is a crucial era for trust in the news. Americans' confidence in the media is at a low. Increasing numbers of people get their information from A.I. and social media. News organizations cannot take for granted that audiences understand what makes fact-based, independent reporting different. With that in mind, The New York Times's Trust Team is pursuing new newsroom initiatives to help people understand the value and nature of our journalism, by opening up our process and showing how we work. We are seeking a senior producer to work closely with the Trust team on videos featuring Times staff that explain how we approach our reporting, the nature of independent journalism and the decisions behind our coverage, standards and practices. You are an expert in vertical/social video production and audience engagement and bring a proven playbook for helping to shape our material and get it seen on other platforms. You will guide a small team to make our work accessible to a broad audience and translate it to sites like TikTok, Instagram and YouTube in alignment with existing NYT Audience goals and projects. You are a strong manager, thoughtful storyteller and excellent collaborator. Video editing and cinematography skills are an asset. You'll serve as a go-to resource for newsroom- and business-side colleagues, providing editorial guidance and constructive feedback, and must be comfortable enforcing deadlines and working in a fast-paced newsroom. This role will require working with desks across the newsroom and requires an effective communicator. This is an in-office position based in New York and includes regular attendance in the office four days each week. There may be some flexibility to work remotely per your departmental guidance. Responsibilities Oversee video production and workflow for the Trust Team. Drive innovative Trust-focused video that explains how Times journalism works, why we cover what we cover and how we make our decisions. Greenlight story development ideas and give feedback on story edits for Trust videos. Edit scripts and guide visual approaches for explainers, Q&As and other short-form videos on our journalistic process that build confidence and trust on and off platform. Review, assign and provide feedback on stories. Direct video production team in interviews and shoots as needed, helping colleagues translate complex reporting and standards decisions into accessible and compelling video. Foster experiments with new video concepts and strategies that reach existing and new audiences, including people who may not already read, watch or listen to The Times. Develop and ensure implementation of the visual strategy as well as create playbooks and provide guidance for the team to make this work a permanent part of our portfolio. Collaborate and coordinate with the Trust and Standards teams and other newsroom stakeholders to align video work with broader trust initiatives and training. Effectively manage and collaborate with colleagues and cross-functional partners. Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world. You will report to the Director of Video. Basic Qualifications 3+ years experience managing or supervising members of a video team. Experience in digital or broadcast news. Understanding of Times standards of journalistic excellence and truthfulness. Understanding of mainstream and emerging social channels. Demonstrated news judgment. Ability to approach the full range of trust and credibility issues facing The Times. Rock-solid judgment, a high-level understanding of what The Times considers fair and independent journalism. Preferred Qualifications Excellent writing, editing and communication skills. Experience developing and editing visual material for social platforms. Experience translating complex reporting and standards decisions into clear, audience-facing explainers. Expert knowledge of current events with advanced level experience covering news stories in the US and internationally. Command of a variety of video sources, including wire services, UGC, archival footage, motion graphics, and original footage. Familiar with digital storytelling formats. Flexibility to work extended hours. Annual base pay range is between $145,000 and $170,000 USD. For roles in the U.S., dependent on your role, you may be eligible for variable pay, such as an annual bonus and restricted stock. Benefits may include medical, dental and vision benefits, Flexible Spending Accounts (F.S.A.s), a company‑matching 401(k) plan, paid vacation, paid sick days, paid parental leave, tuition reimbursement and professional development programs. For roles outside of the U.S., information on benefits will be provided during the interview process. The New York Times Company is committed to being the world’s best source of independent, reliable and quality journalism.
