Externship Experience at NVA An externship experience at an NVA hospital will give students the unique opportunity to understand the day-to-day operations of the practice and gain valuable hands‑on clinical experience. Each NVA hospital operates in a supportive environment committed to excellent medicine and provides exceptional service to animals and their owners. Students can expect to participate in working up cases and assisting in surgeries and dentals within a very personable practice that offers great care in an affluent area. Externship Details Externship experiences at Catoctin Veterinary Clinic typically range from two to eight weeks, depending on student and hospital schedules. All veterinary students, regardless of class year, are encouraged to participate. Students in the clinical portion of their education are eligible for a travel/living expense stipend. Responsibilities Gather patient histories Perform physical exams Create treatment plans Conduct diagnostics Provide dental services Observe, assist, or perform surgical procedures Manage medical care for patients Communicate with the medical team, support staff, and clients Eligibility and Stipend All veterinary students in the clinical portion of their education Eligible for travel/living expense stipend Benefits for Externs Externs receive a stipend and may be eligible for additional support during their externship.
