Utilities Mechanic

The City of New Port Richey is seeking a Utilities Mechanic. This position is full-time and non-exempt.

The anticipated starting rate is between $16.54 and $18.19 hourly for Utilities Mechanic I, and $18.23 to $20.05 hourly for Utilities Mechanic II.

This position involves semi-skilled to skilled work in the installation, repair, and maintenance of water distribution, reclaimed water distribution, and sewage collection systems. Employees perform a variety of manual laboring tasks including the operation of construction equipment in connection with the construction and maintenance of the utility systems.

Essential functions include participating in the installation, maintenance, or repair of water, reclaimed water, and sewer lines; using tapping machines, concrete saws, metal detectors, handsaws, shovels, and wrenches; operating backhoe, trencher, and other types of equipment; maintaining lift stations, repairing pumps, and troubleshooting control logic problems; and performing routine preventive maintenance on equipment.

Minimum qualifications include knowledge of water distribution, reclaimed water, wastewater collection system, plumbing, or irrigation system construction and repair methods; ability to drive a service truck and operate line clearing equipment, pumps, automotive, digging, backfilling, and mowing equipment; and ability to work outdoors in adverse weather conditions and keep accurate field notes.

Training, certifications, and experience include graduation from an accredited high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma, experience installing and/or maintaining a water distribution, sewage collection, plumbing, or irrigation system, and appropriate Florida licensure/level needed for the specific open position.

Special requirements include being on call for 24-hour emergency standby as required by rotation, living close enough to the City to respond to emergency call backs and be on scene within 30 minutes, possessing a valid Florida driver's license, and being able to obtain or have a Florida Commercial Drivers License (CDL) for each specific position.

Physical demands include ability to lift up to 80 pounds, frequently bend, climb, stoop, squat, and walk, stand for long periods of time, work long hours outdoors, occasionally under adverse weather conditions, work around loud noises, and be familiar with OSHA safety regulations and use of safety equipment.

Sensory requirements include ability to hear, speak, and understand conversation in English, see, read, and comprehend letters, numbers, words, characters or symbols, print and draw letters, numbers, words, characters and symbols which are legible and understood by others, and learn complex tasks and remember how to complete tasks without assistance once trained.

Work environment includes working in confined spaces, near high voltage, along roadways where vehicle and pedestrian conflicts are common, dealing with stress related to routine deadlines, multi-tasking successfully, and accepting decisions made by others that may be in opposition of own views.
