Summary The Electrician serves at VA Medical Center in Birmingham - AL and reports directly to the Supervisory Electrician in the Station Electric Shop, with second level supervision from the Maintenance Control Manager. This is an OPEN CONTINUOUS ANNOUNCEMENT and will remain open until September 30 - 2026. Qualifications Applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement. A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence must be supported by detailed descriptions on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen‑out element. Those who satisfy the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and eliminated. Potential eligibilities are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements, including Ability to Do the Work of the Position, Ability to Work without More Than Normal Supervision, Electric Drawings, Technical Practices, Troubleshooting, Use and Maintain Hand Tools, and experience in paid or unpaid roles such as volunteer work. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies. You may receive credit for qualifying volunteer experience, provided you clearly describe the nature of duties and the hours per week spent. Duties Provides highly skilled craft labor to maintain the hospital’s electrical distribution center of both single and three‑phase electrical power. Pumps water out of vaults. Inspects connections between spliced wires and removes deteriorated or damaged insulation from splices/cables. Tightens splice connectors and replaces insulation and retapes connections. Tightens loose connections, replaces damaged insulation, and exercises cut outs to ensure proper operation. Installs, repairs, and replaces electrical components (e.g., televisions, electric‑powered signs) carrying 120‑440 volts in building electrical systems. Runs conduit and metal raceways from components to building power panels and maintains and installs internal lighting. Problem‑solves and troubleshoots using manual and power wrenches, screwdrivers, pliers, wire cutters, snippers, adjustable wrenches, hammers, levels, voltmeters, ammeters, circuit testers, and phase meters. Operates a motor vehicle to transport tools, supplies, and materials to work sites. Organizes assigned work to minimize materials and man‑hours and instructs others in the operation of and preventive maintenance for related tools and equipment. Supports preventive maintenance for mechanical, electrical, and associated control systems by assisting in performance, administration, and monitoring. Wears a tool belt weighing 20 lb while performing all functions. Stands, stoops, bends, kneels, climbs, and works in strenuous and uncomfortable positions. Ascends a six‑foot step ladder at least 15 times per day for ceiling light and conduit work; may ascend ladders or maintenance stairs up to 60 feet to access exterior building lights and other components. Works at heights up to 120 feet for two hours at a time during shifts. Enters and maneuvers in restricted spaces in underground vaults for up to two hours to maintain electrical systems. Transports materials weighing up to 50 lbs over distances of up to 200 yards on occasion. Handles tools, conduit, wiring, and other electrical components; pulls damaged or deteriorated wiring and conduits and manipulates steel fish tape to run new wiring. Works at floor/ground level and or restricted spaces up to two hours per shift to access electrical components. Possesses 20/20 vision with or without corrective lenses and can align conduit, raceways, wiring, and other components accurately.
