Senior Actuarial Consultant - Long Term Care Reserving (Life & Health)

JOB DESCRIPTION:

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Performs a combination of duties in accordance with departmental guidelines:

• Manages execution of monthly reserving and financial close processes performing complex actuarial calculations and collaborating with Reserving actuary team members and cross functional partners.
• Drives the process behind the determination of reserves to support the monthly close process and annual reserve testing for the LTC block of business.
• Owns the roadmap and cross functional execution of improving and modernizing reserving-specific data preparation workflows through adoption of industry leading tools and simplifying processes. Ensures the accuracy of all financial reports and statements with adherence to SOX controls, in close collaboration with Finance peers and other Actuarial teams.
• Produces highly technical reports and communicates with other actuarial and analytical staff and management, including presentations to senior management. Facilitates communication and provides technical guidance to business partners and other functional areas, such as Claims and Finance, on actuarial issues.
• Monitors experience and financial trends for the LTC and structured settlement segments.
• Manages project teams and may be responsible for special projects and presentations.
• Provides guidance to less experienced team members and may lead and/or participate in special projects.
• Stays current in the functional area of expertise and on industry trends and developments, and ensures knowledge transfer within the organization.

• Strong knowledge of the core functions of an insurance company, general insurance, actuarial and statistical concepts.
• Advanced actuarial and financial expertise and product-specific knowledge.
• Strong interpersonal, communication and presentation skills, with the ability to effectively interact with all levels of CNA’s internal and external business partners.
• Strong analytical, critical-thinking and problem-solving skills, with the ability to effectively resolve complex situations and issues.

• Ability to comprehend business data and metrics and further articulate analyses of actuarial data within internal reports.
• Experience working in a SOX controlled environment with financial results reporting.
• Experience with Microsoft Office Suite and other business-related software systems, including processing systems and applications.
• Experience with ETL tools, such as SQL or Alteryx.
• Experience with BI tools, such as Tableau, PowerBI, or Looker.
• Preferred, but not required, experience with programming and tools such as SAS, SQL or R; experience with Google Cloud Platform; or experience with actuarial valuation systems such as AXIS Actuarial Modeling Software.
• Preferred, but not required, experience with insurance reserve accounting standards (i.e. GAAP or LDTI).
  

Education & Experience

• Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline, or equivalent.
• Typically a minimum of five to seven years of related work experience.
• Typically holds an Associate of the Society of Actuaries (ASA) credential and may be working toward Fellowship; may include candidates who have attained their FSA.

In certain jurisdictions, CNA is legally required to include a reasonable estimate of the compensation for this role. In District of Columbia, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Illinois , Maryland, Massachusetts , New York and Washington, the national base pay range for this job level is $72,000 to $141,000 annually. Salary determinations are based on various factors, including but not limited to, relevant work experience, skills, certifications and location.
