Executive Vice President, Chief Operating Officer

The Position Executive Vice President/Chief Operating Officer (EVP/COO) – a senior leadership position reporting directly to President Matt Parlow – directs daily administrative and business operations, translating the institution’s vision into operational plans, managing organizational change, and aligning resources with strategic goals. The EVP/COO oversees campus infrastructure, financial performance, capital projects, instructional technology, safety and emergency preparedness, and human resources. The role also includes oversight of capital project planning, facilities management, human resources, information technology, security, outsourced contract management, and the daily operations of both the Orange and Rinker campuses. In addition to daily responsibilities, the EVP/COO collaborates with the executive leadership team, presents to the Board of Trustees, Board of Governors, President’s Cabinet, and Faculty Senate, and supports trustee committees such as Finance, Real Estate, Audit, and Investments. Key Responsibilities Strategic Leadership – translating the institution’s vision into operational plans and managing organizational change. Operational Management – overseeing non‑academic units, including facilities management, campus planning, human resources, information technology, security, and outsourced contract management. Financial Stewardship – ensuring fiscal responsibility, budgetary control, and long‑term financial resilience. Administrative Efficiency – improving organizational processes, policies, and performance to enhance service quality and effectiveness. Stakeholder Relations – collaborating with faculty, staff, and external partners to support institutional success. Qualifications Seasoned leadership experience motivating and managing multiple teams as a COO in a complex higher‑education, healthcare, or non‑profit environment. Strong financial acumen and proven experience in resource management, investment oversight, budgeting, complex project management, and operational improvement best practices. Experience with strategic‑plan development, implementation, and evaluation. Proven skills in identifying and assessing risks in consultation with leadership and incorporating those risks into operational problem‑solving and improvement. Strong understanding of campus planning, facilities, human resources, information services and technology, public safety and risk management, compliance, event operations, and auxiliary vendor relationships. Exceptional communication, collaboration, and management skills. Strong problem‑solving and decision‑making capabilities focused on achieving goals. Excellent discernment, judgment, integrity, and prioritization. Experience in the State of California. Ability to quickly learn new institutional cultures and speak to Chapman’s culture with confidence. Experience leveraging technology to advance institutional goals through improved processes and capabilities. A collaborative growth mindset that can think and dream big while managing ideas that differ from the institution’s vision or strategy. Baccalaureate degree required; MBA preferred.
