Registered Nurse II - Vascular Access

Overview Come lead with us at Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital. The Registered Nurse (RN) II is a licensed staff nurse, experienced clinician, and leads at the Competent to Proficient stage of Benner's model. The RN II provides professional nursing care to a diverse patient population, conducts nursing assessments, assists with exams and treatment, patient education, and maintenance of medical records. The RN II communicates and collaborates with physicians and the interprofessional health care team to facilitate, coordinate, and maintain compassionate, efficient, quality care and achievement of desired treatment outcomes. The RN II demonstrates clinical competence when providing care, using technology, administering medications, performing procedures, and managing emergencies, acting as a patient and family advocate to monitor and maintain patient rights. This role assumes leadership with progressive responsibility including participating in or leading unit and shared governance initiatives, serving as charge nurse or preceptor to students or new employees, and possibly contributing to service line or hospital-wide initiatives in partnership with management. Responsibilities Provide direct patient care and assessment, with attention to safety, quality, and efficiency. Collaborate with physicians and interprofessional team to plan and coordinate patient care. Participate in or lead unit and shared governance initiatives; serve as charge nurse or preceptor as appropriate. Communicate and educate patients and families, and maintain accurate medical records. Demonstrate clinical competence in care delivery, use of technology, medication administration, procedures, and emergency management. Qualifications Education Graduate of an education program approved by the credentialing body for the required credential(s) indicated in the Certifications, Licenses and Registrations section Experience Twelve months of registered nurse experience in a healthcare environment Licenses and Certifications Required: RN - Registered Nurse - Texas State Licensure - Texas Board of Nursing (PSV Compact Licensure) – Must obtain permanent Texas license within 60 days (if establishing Texas residency) BLS - Basic Life Support or Instructor (AHA) ACLS - Advanced Cardiac Life Support or Instructor (AHA) within 4 months Preferred: Magnet - ANCC Recognized Certification Knowledge and Abilities Demonstrates the skills and competencies necessary to safely perform the assigned job, as defined in orientation and annual competency checklists. Proficient in English (speaking, reading, and writing) to perform essential functions with emphasis on safety and security. Effective communication with patients, families, physicians, and coworkers with customer service focus. Strong assessment, organizational, and problem-solving skills; ability to prioritize multiple tasks. Ability to function independently and exercise judgment in interactions with physicians, care team, patients and families. Uses critical thinking and clinical judgment to work autonomously as defined by the Nurse Practice Act. Proficient time management and professional contributions as defined in Clinical Career Path program guide. Working knowledge of Microsoft products including Outlook Essential Functions People Use therapeutic communication to establish relationships with patients, families, and the interprofessional health care team to collaborate on the plan of care. Contribute to teamwork by monitoring unit acuity, offering assistance, and responding to requests; apply feedback to improve patient outcomes. Provide staff education, coaching, and mentorship; may include preceptorship; support improvements in turnover/retention/employee engagement. Service Follow patient and family-centered care standards; perform nursing assessments, assist with exams and treatment, and maintain medical records; practice with cultural diversity and inclusion principles. Develop, update, and communicate care plans including discharge planning; advocate for patients/families and resolve clinical and ethical concerns using appropriate resources. Provide patient teaching aligned with learning needs and evaluate comprehension; adapt teaching methods as needed. Support department goals for patient satisfaction through peer accountability to service standards. Quality/Safety Adhere to standards of care as outlined in the Houston Methodist Professional Nursing Practice document. Follow regulatory requirements and professional practice standards; identify practice improvements with evidence to improve core measures and safety with accurate documentation. Provide and coordinate care for complex patients with interprofessional team and accurate documentation; use clinical judgment and evidence-based analysis. Improve quality and safety scores through peer accountability and collaboration with the care team. Finance Display self-motivation to manage time, document care timely, minimize overtime, and prioritize tasks; contribute to unit resource utilization and budget considerations. Help meet department financial targets by improving efficiency and other measures per department guidelines. Growth/Innovation Identify areas for innovation and improvement via evidence-based practice; contribute to performance improvement projects and shared governance. Champion new care pathways or service line implementations; analyze trends and present options to governance and leadership. Supplemental Work attire: Scrubs; other department-approved specifics as needed. On-call as required during emergencies; on-call status may be required.
