Surgical Services Highly trained surgeons at The Queen's Medical Center provide a wide range of surgical services to patients of all ages from throughout Hawaii and the Pacific Region. As a Level I Trauma Center, Queen's is staffed around the clock with experienced and dedicated Surgeons, Anesthesiologist, Registered Nurses, Surgical Technologists and other health professionals who are ready to perform the most complex surgical procedures. Surgeries are performed for both inpatient and outpatient procedures, including in the areas of cardiology, neurology, orthopedics, ophthalmology, urology, gynecology, otolaryngology, dental/maxillofacial, plastic, trauma and general surgery. The Queen's Medical Center is a national leader in robotic surgery, utilizing the da Vinci Xi® surgical system to advance minimally invasive surgery for highly complex, multi and single-quadrant surgical procedures. Our advanced robotic systems give doctors greater control and vision during surgery, allowing them to perform safe, less invasive, and precise surgical procedures. Queen's features 17 state-of-the-art operating rooms, including three that are equipped for open-heart procedures and two with the latest technology used to perform minimally invasive surgery.

JOB SUMMARY/RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Provides emergency surgery/trauma call coverage, including assessment, surgery if needed, consultation, rounding and follow-up of patients.
• Fosters teamwork and communication among all internal and external constituencies.

CLINICAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Provides in-house services as scheduled by the Medical Director or designee.
• Serves as the attending physician for his/her own patients in the SICU and serves as a consultant when requested.
• Assists the attending and/or consultant physician in the management of patients in the SICU.
• In emergent situations in the SICU, when the physician is not the attending or consultant, evaluates and stabilizes patients until an attending or consultant physician can be contacted and/or arrives.
• Directs the management of such patient until such time as the attending or consultant physician arrives to assume responsibility to direct care. The attending or consultant physician may delegate responsibility to the physician, allowing him/her to continue to direct care for specific patients in the SICU.
• Evaluates patients in the Medical Center for potential admission to the SICU.
• Evaluates hospitalized patients who have become unstable and are considered for transfer to the SICU.
• Responds immediately to assist in the care of critically ill patients anywhere in the Medical Center as requested by an attending or consultant physician.
• Supervises and assists house staff in the evaluation and management of team care patients.
• Provides call coverage for all Emergency Department and transfer hotline general surgery consults and admissions and any emergent or urgent general surgery in-patient consults. Provides inpatient management of general emergent or urgent general surgery patients along with outpatient follow up.
• Provides In-House trauma coverage for Emergency Department and transfer hotline. Provides inpatient management of trauma patients along with outpatient clinic follow up.

II. TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Essential: finger dexterity, seeing, hearing, speaking, reaching above, at and below shoulder level, repetitive arm/hand motions. Frequent: standing, walking, sitting, stopping/bending, static gripping of an object for prolonged periods, frequent gripping of an object. Occasional: twisting body, lifting and pushing/pulling. Operates a variety of medical equipment, computer, telephone, pager.

III. TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS: Not substantially subjected to adverse environmental conditions. Exposure to hazardous chemicals and infectious agents is an occupational risk; therefore, standard safety regulations must be maintained to avoid contamination.

IV. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: A. EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION AND LICENSURE: Graduate of an accredited School of Medicine or EC FMG certification. Current unrestricted license to practice medicine in the State of Hawaii. Board certified or board qualified in General Surgery. If not board certified at hire, must be board certified within two (2) years of entrance into the position. Surgical Critical Care Fellowship preferred. B. EXPERIENCE: During the period of employment, shall be and remain a member of the QMC medical staff in good standing with appropriate privileges without restriction. Qualified for an appointment on the faculty of the University of Hawaii John A. Burns School of Medicine. Excellent organizational and communication skills.
