There will be occasion travel to Mentor Surgery Location* The Outpatient Surgery Center Pharmacy Technician is a critical role that supports daily pharmacy operations at the Suburban and Mentor locations. This position ensures medication safety and compliance by managing tasks such as checking and restocking automated dispensing units, verifying expirations, processing returns, and resolving discrepancies. The technician also handles essential documentation, responds to staff requests, and maintains communication between pharmacy and clinical teams. Their consistent presence is vital to maintaining workflow efficiency, patient safety, and regulatory standards across multiple surgery centers. A Brief Overview The Pharmacy Technician 3 is a proficient technician that is accountable for assisting pharmacists in the retrieval, processing, preparation, and distribution of medications for patient administration. The Technician 3 functions and can train in all aspects of drug distribution that do not require the professional judgment of a pharmacist. All of the above assigned activities are performed under the supervision of a Pharmacist. The Pharmacy Technician 3 is also responsible for performing all the functions of the Technician 1 or 2 when assigned.

What You Will Do

For Inpatient Pharmacy Tech 3, activities include but are not limited to:

• Accurately prepares non-hazardous compounded sterile products in strict accordance with USP <797> standards; performs hazardous drug compounding (USP <800>) as assigned or required by facility needs.
• Accurately prepares and documents non-sterile compounded formulations following USP <795> guidelines and ensures precise beyond-use dating (BUD)
• Assists in troubleshooting and resolving routine hardware and software issues for Automated Dispensing Cabinets (ADCs)
• Performs inventory replenishment and cycle counts across pharmacy and other storage areas to maintain optimal par levels and prevent stockouts of critical medications.
• Orients and trains new staff on standard departmental workflows, safety protocols, and pharmacy technology
• Contributes to team problem-solving regarding immediate operational bottlenecks or distribution delays.
• Other duties or responsibilities as assigned

For Outpatient Pharmacy Tech 3, activities include but are not limited to:

• Utilizes pharmacy systems to process prescriptions, including insurance adjudication and prior authorization submittal, and accurately prepares dangerous drugs for dispensing including counting, pouring, labeling, and performing non-sterile drug compounding and reconstitution.
• Inventory, replenish, and maintain drug stock which includes automated dispensing cabinets and prescription pick-up kiosks.
• Packaging and selling dangerous drugs to a patient or patient representative and answering questions to ensure a positive patient experience.
• Inventory management including par levels, order review and submission, returns processing, recall management, and outdates process oversight.
• Provides direction to technician staff on day to day operations and performs extensive trainer duties with new hires and/or technician trainees.
• Extensive buyer duties including purchasing, invoice processing, cost transferring, and specialized ordering.

For Medication History Pharmacy Tech 3, activities include but are not limited to:

• Support medication history collection process for ED and inpatient units utilizing appropriate sources and communication.
• Communicate effectively with patients during the interview and accurately record the medication history.
• Maintain open communication with nurses, patient care technicians, practitioners, and other personnel in the hospital to report important findings.
• Duties may include those addressed above in the Inpatient Pharmacy Technician Essential Functions.

For Infusion Pharmacy Tech 3, Infusion Technician Essential Functions align with Inpatient Technician Essential Functions.

Additional Responsibilities Performs other duties as assigned. Complies with all policies and standards. For specific duties and responsibilities, refer to documentation provided by the department during orientation. Must abide by all requirements to safely and securely maintain Protected Health Information (PHI) for our patients. Annual training, the UH Code of Conduct and UH policies and procedures are in place to address appropriate use of PHI in the workplace.

Qualifications

Education High School Equivalent / GED (Required) and Graduate of an accredited pharmacy technician program. (Preferred) Work Experience At least Two (2) years of experience as a Certified Pharmacy Technician (Required) and Prior experience as a pharmacy technician in a comparable hospital or community setting (Preferred) Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Understanding of metric system and basic math concepts. (Required proficiency) Good communication skills are essential. (Required proficiency) Knowledge of personal computer, calculator, facsimile machines. (Required proficiency) Basic knowledge of pharmacy computer systems, TPN compounders, and automated dispensing cabinets.
