Job Description The Director, Online & Digital Sales is responsible for leading the adult trade sales strategy and day-to-day sales management for Amazon and other online and digital retail accounts, with primary focus on Random House, Crown, and Knopf titles. This role manages a team of National Account Managers, owns key account relationships, drives frontlist and backlist growth, and partners closely with publishing, inventory, operations lead and other sales directors, to deliver profitable sales, strong account execution, and a consistent digital retail strategy. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Manages, coaches, and develops a team of National Account Managers, overseeing day-to-day priorities, supporting career growth, and ensuring consistent execution across titles, imprints, and account touchpoints.
  • Leads the team in maximizing online and digital channel sales, including frontlist launches, initial orders, reorders, backlist growth, preorder strategy, promotional opportunities, and account-specific initiatives.
  • Builds and maintains strong relationships with publishing leadership, sales division heads, editorial, marketing, publicity, inventory, operations, finance, credit, and analytics teams to ensure account plans are aligned with company priorities, publishing goals, and account requirements.
  • Serves as a key partner to publishers and internal stakeholders, providing clear communication, timely business updates, recommendations, and feedback on account performance, title opportunities, risks, market trends, and account initiatives.
  • Strategizes the development and growth of frontlist and backlist titles across Amazon and other online/digital accounts, working closely with the team and publishing partners to identify opportunities and address challenges.
  • Coordinates with account contacts and internal partners to share, define, and execute promotional, merchandising, marketing, and discoverability opportunities across online stores and digital channels.
  • Builds and manages monthly, seasonal, and annual account budgets, including sales forecasts, promotional plans, co-op/merchandising investments, and performance tracking against plan.
  • Uses data, reporting, and account insights to evaluate title performance, promotional effectiveness, inventory position, consumer demand, and emerging online retail opportunities.
  • Works closely with operations and inventory partners to support forecast alignment, replenishment, availability, preorder readiness, returns visibility, and issue resolution, while maintaining clear distinction between sales ownership and operational execution.
  • Represents the online/digital retail channel in broader sales and publishing conversations and helps shape how the company shows up to Amazon and other digital accounts.

Qualifications Minimum of 7 years of prior publishing sales/marketing experience Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including presentation skills Strong analytical skills Ability to work well under pressure and problem solve Proactive and able to adapt to changing priorities and environments Proven ability to successfully plan and manage at both the strategic and operational levels Prior supervisory experience Knowledge of the overall book market, including familiarity with industry supply chain, authors, titles, category performance, and publishing trends Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint

The Penguin Random House national headquarters is located in New York City. The position is open to remote candidates based in the United States. The salary range for this position is $95,000 - $120,000. All positions are currently eligible for annual profit award or bonus, subject to Company results.
