Communications Technician
The Communications Technician performs preventive and corrective maintenance on communication and SCADA equipment to ensure reliable operation of communication systems within a rail environment. This role oversees the proper functioning of central communication systems, supports field technicians with troubleshooting, and ensures all activities comply with safety, quality, and environmental procedures.
Responsibilities
- Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on communication and SCADA equipment to meet availability for service requirements.
- Ensure full compliance with maintenance procedures and instructions, including safety, quality, and environmental procedures.
- Implement and follow procedures and rules for service, repair, and maintenance of communication equipment.
- Oversee the operations and correct functioning of communication systems and central equipment to meet contractual performance requirements.
- Periodically download communication, video, and voice log files for analysis and recordkeeping.
- Analyze log files to troubleshoot issues and provide predictive maintenance for the communication system.
- Perform troubleshooting, identification, and resolution of system and subsystem issues to support field technicians in diagnosing and correcting faults.
- Complete operational, equipment failure, safety, and other reports accurately and on time as required.
- Carry out routine, preventive, and unscheduled maintenance, including inspection, adjustments, testing, cleaning, and proper maintenance of central communication equipment in accordance with schematics, operations manuals, and manufacturers' maintenance instructions.
- Ensure sufficient materials, hand tools, and equipment are available to support maintenance activities.
- Identify failure trends early that may impact fleet availability and communicate findings appropriately.
- Liaise with and supervise supplier staff performing work on communication systems and equipment.
- Conduct inspections and acceptance of equipment to confirm compliance with specifications and performance standards.
- Enter accurate and timely information into the MMIS (Maintenance Management Information System).
- Perform related duties as requested by leadership to support operational needs.
- Perform additional job duties as assigned to support the ongoing reliability and performance of the communication systems.
Essential Skills
- Demonstrated experience in equipment maintenance and repair, particularly in communication and SCADA systems.
- Strong troubleshooting skills for diagnosing and resolving system and subsystem issues.
- Hands-on experience as a maintenance technician or equivalent role working with complex technical systems.
- Ability to read and interpret schematics, operations manuals, and manufacturers' maintenance instructions.
- Proficiency in performing preventive, corrective, and unscheduled maintenance on central communication equipment.
- Capability to analyze communication, video, and voice log files for troubleshooting and predictive maintenance.
- Competence in completing detailed operational, equipment failure, and safety reports.
- Experience using a Maintenance Management Information System (MMIS) or similar system for data entry and maintenance tracking.
- Ability to supervise and coordinate with supplier staff performing maintenance or repair work.
- Strong awareness of and adherence to safety, quality, and environmental procedures.
- Flexibility to work shifts, including weekends and holidays, in a rail or similar infrastructure environment.
Ideal Skills & Qualifications (not required)
- Previous work as a Communications Technician or equivalent technical discipline.
- Previous work within a rail or large infrastructure environment.
- Familiarity with SCADA systems and central communication equipment used in transit or infrastructure projects.
- Ability to identify failure trends and contribute to reliability improvement initiatives.
- Strong organizational skills to ensure tools, materials, and equipment are available for maintenance tasks.
- Effective communication skills to support coordination with field technicians and suppliers.

Work Environment
The role is based in a rail environment, working with central communication and SCADA equipment that supports an operating transit system. The position involves both workshop and control-room-style settings, as well as occasional work in rail facilities, using standard maintenance tools, test equipment, and a Maintenance Management Information System (MMIS) for documentation and tracking. The environment emphasizes strict adherence to safety, quality, and environmental procedures while working around operational rail systems.

This is a Permanent position based out of Pearl City, HI.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $62067.20 - $62067.20/yr.
