**This Job is in-person, located in Flandreau, South Dakota** SUMMARY: Tribal Police Officers are responsible for patrolling the reservation and tribal trust lands to prevent crime and enforce laws and regulations, responding to all calls for service, and performing specialized technical, administrative, and/or investigative assignments. Police Officers should possess an understanding of tribal sovereignty, laws, and regulations, as well as the need for enforcement. The principal duties of this class are performed in a variety of emergency and non-emergency situations, which may involve exposure to potential personal danger. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Maintains law and order within the jurisdiction of the Flandreau Santee Sioux Tribe.
• Provides law enforcement services to the tribal community, co-workers, and public in a tactical, ethical, pleasant, and courteous manner.
• Responds to all calls concerning non-emergencies and emergencies such as traffic accidents, suspicious activity, confrontations, disturbances, altercations, and disorderly conduct.
• Maintains law and order within the area of assignment by patrolling the area in a patrol vehicle, investigating suspicious situations, and taking action as appropriate.
• Where serious crimes or personal injury traffic accidents are involved, determines necessary action, notifies appropriate authorities, safeguards scenes, preserves evidence, identifies and obtains information from witnesses, and develops preliminary investigative leads.
• Performs investigative work such as investigation of domestic/civil disputes, felonies, and misdemeanors, traffic accidents involving property damage or personal injury, or incidents of alleged or suspected burglary or vandalism.
• Investigates, apprehends, arrests, and/or detains all persons charged with violation of Federal or Tribal Law & Order Codes.
• Conducts preliminary investigations at crime scenes, including the gathering of evidence and the locating of witnesses and victims.
• Assesses crime scenes where children may be in the home and adheres to Mandatory Reporting procedures.
• Collects and preserves evidence associated with crimes.
• Searches persons, places, and things; seizes and impounds property and evidence.
• Process, collect, and label evidence or property as required
• Interviews victims, witnesses, suspects, etc.
• Photographs crime scenes and prepares reports.
• Makes arrests in cases of crimes and transports person(s) arrested to the appropriate authority for booking or formal charging.
• Performs such assignments as working radar on busy highways, patrolling, operating night surveillance, coordinating traffic and crowd control activities at celebrations and community functions.
• Helps to direct traffic at times of funerals, emergencies, or congestion.
• Conducts traffic stops, issues citations for violation,s and uses a breath-analyzer to determine the degree of intoxication of drivers, and operates other technical equipment.
• Testifies at hearings and trials as an expert witness as required.
• Prepares written reports and documents incidents or cases for Tribal Prosecutor and/or Tribal Child Protection staff in a timely manner; completes and maintains; reports, logs, and other records as required in a legible manner.
• Prepares and serves legal documents as required.
• Maintains confidentiality of investigations and cases. Protects the privacy and constitutional rights of all persons.
• Performs public assistance activities.
• May conduct search and rescue duties.
• Administers first aid when necessary, including the use of oxygen, CPR, and other equipment and techniques to those in need when appropriate.
• Must be able to quickly assess situations in accordance with the operating rules, regulations, and laws, while considering the needs of the tribal community in order to protect the health and safety of the tribal community, public, other officers, and self
• May participate in special task forces assigned by supervisory staff, which may include school resource officer duties, such as student, staff, and community education and training, as requested by the tribal community, tribal government, and the Tribal Council
• Must be available for emergency law enforcement duties at any time.
• Serves as training officer as directed, providing indoctrination and instruction to Bureau, Tribal, or other law enforcement personnel
• Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with the community, Tribal Courts staff, Executive Committee, representatives of federal, state, local, and other tribal agencies.
• Works in partnership to build positive relationships with the tribal community and other agencies by solving law enforcement issues to improve the quality of life for the tribal community and its residents
• Assists the Tribe with public education programs to enforce law and order.
• Assists the tribal community with crime prevention measures whenever possible.
• Attends department and staff meetings.
• Maintains assigned equipment and vehicles, in a clean and serviceable condition.
• Attends necessary training for current certifications.
• Performs other duties as assigned by the Chief of Police MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS:

• Performs other duties as assigned by the Chief of Police MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS:
- Must have a High school Diploma and/or GED equivalent.
- Must be at least 21 years of age.
- Possession of a valid South Dakota Driver's license.
- Must pass a pre-employment drug and alcohol screening and P.L. 101-630, and Law Enforcement background check.
- Must be able to handle multiple tasks and/or situations and work odd hours, nights, weekends, and Holidays.
- Must be able to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing to interface with a wide range of people and/or other human service and justice departments.
- Must have completed Basic Police Officer or Police Officer Training and be certified as a Police Officer. (State or Federal EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Criminal Justice Degree preferred; Direct experience with law enforcement in native communities is strongly preferred. Law Enforcement Certificate preferred.
