Job Title: Police Officer Department: Chicago Police Department Job Number: 9161-CPD-042026 Salary: Starting at $63,636, increasing to $95,982 after 18 months. Essential Duties Build community trust and confidence through day‑to‑day interactions. Resolve conflicts through effective communication. Communicate effectively with people from various social and cultural backgrounds. Monitor environment and crime conditions of an assigned geographic area using routine patrol methods. Respond to incidents either assigned or observed as required. Gather relevant information at an incident to conduct a preliminary investigation. Ensure any personal property taken into custody is documented correctly and secured. Seek to apprehend suspected violators of the law using arrest or citation procedures. Actively pursue suspected law violators using search and containment methods. Process suspected law violators using arrest and booking procedures. Enforce state and municipal traffic laws using arrest and citation procedures. Gather information at traffic crash scenes to conduct preliminary investigations. Use hand signals to direct traffic as necessary around accidents, objects on the road, or intersections when traffic signals are not working. Comply with Department rules, regulations, policies, and all federal, state, and municipal laws that govern police officers’ activities. Appear in court and present testimony. Perform the role safely, effectively, and following local, state, and federal law as well as CPD policy and procedures. Perform other duties as required. Note: The list of essential duties is not intended to be inclusive. There may be other duties that are essential to this position. Minimum Qualifications Applicant must be 20 years of age. Cannot enter the Police Academy until age 21; if 40th birthday is reached before academy, applicant is disqualified. City appoints no person after the 40th birthday to a probationary Police Officer position. At entry into the Police Academy, must meet the education and/or military requirements listed below. Education / Military Service: At least 60 semester hours from an accredited college or university (documentation required); may waive if applicant has served two consecutive years on active duty with honorable discharge; OR completed at least 30 semester hours and served one year on active duty; OR at least two years of full‑time employment as a peace officer; OR at least three years of full‑time employment as a correctional officer, detention officer, licensed professional security or private security contractor, professional trade industry employee, or paraprofessional work experience in social services, health care services, or education; OR successful completion of the City Colleges of Chicago Pathway to Policing program. Licensure, Certification, or Other Qualifications Recruits must be fully vaccinated at the time their academy class starts. Must be a U.S. citizen or a legal resident at the time of entry to the Police Academy. Residency Requirement: Must be a resident of the City of Chicago at the time of entry to the Police Academy. Must have a valid Illinois driver’s license at the time of entry to the Police Academy. Must have a Firearm Owner’s Identification (FOID) card issued by the State of Illinois at the time of entry to the Police Academy. Must maintain the ability to safely handle and use a department-approved firearm. Must successfully pass all examinations mandated by State Law to receive certification as a Peace Officer. Must successfully complete academy training program. Must pass a background investigation and all required pre‑employment procedures and processes as required by the Chicago Police Department.
