Day Camp Coordinator – DPF 4-H Camp This position serves as Day Camp Coordinator for DPF 4-H Camp, a residential summer camp owned and operated by Cornell Cooperative Extension Association of Nassau County in Riverhead, New York. The primary responsibilities include supervising assigned staff and campers, counseling staff for job success, managing camper behavior, designing weekly program, implementing afternoon and evening activities, and assisting with daily operations of the camp. This role may include cabin responsibilities as needed. Required Qualifications Minimum age 18 years. Current cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and First Aid certifications, with willingness to recertify if necessary. Experience supervising campers and staff in a camp or structured environment. Desire, ability and willingness to live at DPF 4-H Camp during all camp sessions. Ability to meet travel requirements for the position. Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends as required. Preferred Qualifications 21 years of age preferred. Experience in leadership roles or current employment in education. Demonstrated ability to teach skills to staff and campers of all ages. Previous camp staff experience. Demonstrated ability to supervise staff and provide guidance. Desire to work with children and young adults outdoors. Good character, integrity, adaptability, enthusiasm, sense of humor, patience, and self‑control. Responsibilities/Essential Functions Program Responsibilities – 85% Represent DPF 4-H Camp in initial contact with parents and campers on opening day, ensuring a welcoming environment. Maintain direct communication with the Camp Director and/or Camp Specialist regarding all pertinent camp issues. Assist Camp Director in implementing and supporting camper cabins, activities and classes, including special programs and research‑based 4‑H curriculum. Implement appropriate subject matter curriculum and certification. Provide support to Counselors as needed for added success in their positions. Assist Camp Director in guiding staff regarding special‑needs campers, conflict mediation, and special concerns. Assist in designing developmentally appropriate leadership training programs for various ages and skill levels. Assist in developing staff in‑service training programs, including pre‑camp counseling staff training. Assist in developing camper activities and classes, including evening and weekend programs. Assist in evaluating the effectiveness of all program offerings under the leadership of the 4‑H Camp Director. Assist cabin counselors in supervising 6‑16 campers in cabins, ensuring safety and well‑being at all times. Collect cabin daily reports and review for camper issues; intervene and mediate as necessary. Serve as the main contact for conflict resolution involving campers and staff, seeking additional resources when needed. Supervise campers during all meals, recreation time, free time, swim, evening and weekend programs, and other camp activities. Collaborate with Camp Specialist, Program Directors and Camp Counselors to provide all campers the opportunity to participate in all camp activities and to provide support for these activities. Act as a positive role model, ensuring counselors and camper behaviors align with camp standards. Administrative Responsibilities – 10% Enforce all camp health and safety standards, keeping campers safe at all times. Supervise assigned Program and Counselor staff. Assist in coordinating developmentally appropriate leadership training programs (pre‑season and in‑season). Assist Camp Director in coordinating and planning camper activities and classes, including afternoon, special programs, evening and weekend activities. Assist in coordinating staff in‑service training programs, including pre‑camp counseling staff training. Oversee inventory and curriculum of program areas. Assist in staff and camper assignments such as cabin assignments, staff assignments, time off, etc. Assist campers and staff in scheduling classes and following the daily camp schedule. Monitor progress of classes and report areas of concern to the Education Director. Oversee maintenance and inspection of program equipment, supplies, and sites; take equipment out of service or request repairs as needed. Assist in the daily upkeep of camp facilities and maintain organized program areas. Assist in evaluating the current camping season and make suggestions for the next season. Perform other duties as assigned or reassigned as directed by the Camp Director or Camp Specialist. Position may involve transport of program participants and/or program materials and resources. Professional Improvement – 5% Attend DPF 4-H Camp orientation/training program and participate in staff meetings and required training events as scheduled. Co‑operate with Supervisor and/or Executive Director to develop and pursue a professional development plan that increases competencies relative to position accountabilities and addresses changes in programming and association priorities. Collaborate in activities that support Cornell Cooperative Extension, including attendance at staff meetings, timely expense reporting, working with other staff, and general marketing of Extension programs as assigned. Health and Safety Support the Association in maintaining a safe working environment. Follow all applicable federal, state, local regulations and Association health and safety policy, procedure, requirement, and standards.
