Assistant Principal
Reporting to: Principal
Status: Full-time, Exempt, 12 months
Bright Star Schools is a free, publicly funded and open enrollment non-profit organization with nine public charters in urban Los Angeles. Across all of our Bright Star sites, over 90% of our students are eligible for free and reduced lunch.

Assistant Principal Role Summary:
The Assistant Principal supports the overall vision for Bright Star Schools and the school site. The assistant principal supports the implementation of the instructional and cultural vision, school-wide strategic plan including, but not limited to: coordinating assessments, teacher coaching and support, and supporting the principal with all school based needs. As the Assistant Principal is one of the main coaches for teachers, their pedagogical background will be imperative in helping them lead professional development for teachers and meetings with teacher leaders. In addition, this individual plays a major role in establishing and managing the school culture through aligned systems and structures under the umbrellas of MTSS, PBIS, progressive discipline and restorative practices. This equity based leader would also be responsible for oversight of social emotional student learning and non-instructional student programs such as Life Experience Lessons (field trips) and student activities.
The Assistant Principal's primary area of responsibility includes developing relationships with students, families, teachers and colleagues based on mutual respect, integrity and trust, in pursuit of meeting school goals and improving academic outcomes for ALL students.
Assistant Principals supervise all individuals who carry out the programs that they are charged to lead.
Responsibilities and Duties:
Basic Components of the Job Description for the Assistant Principal position include (but are not limited to):
- Contribute actively to the School Leadership Team (SLT) and network Communities of Practice (COP), aligning work to the strategic plan.
- Lead and participate in key school site events and meetings (e.g., culture meetings, parent nights, assemblies, attendance meetings).
- Model humility, openness to feedback, and continuous learning while cultivating a positive, inclusive school climate.
- Build strong, trusting relationships with students, families, staff, and the community through compassionate, equity-focused leadership.
Qualifications & Experience
Minimum:
- Valid, Clear, California Teaching Credential (Single Subject or Multiple Subject Teaching Credential preferred) or P.P.S. Credential
- At least three years of experience as a teacher lead, instructional coach/mentor, lead counselor, or an administrative role
- Valid California Administrative credential (or currently enrolled in an administrative credential program)
- At least four years of teaching or school guidance counseling experience, with a proven record of supporting student achievement and growth
- Evidence of strong organizational, student management, and interpersonal skills
- Working knowledge of Google Apps, plus an aptitude for quickly learning and mastering other data-based programs
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Willingness to quickly digest and, when needed, create documents for the school community (students, teachers, parents)
- Ability to analyze complex student data, identify trends, and create action steps that will lead to student growth
- Understanding of and agreement with our student, parent, and employee expectations

Working Conditions/Work Environment
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is generally expected to work indoors in typical school and office environments. This position involves:
- Occasional exposure to extreme or varying temperatures.
- Occasional exposure to outdoor elements such as sun, precipitation and wind or wet/humid surroundings.
- Occasional/ exposure to loud noise, fumes, smoke, dust.

- Must be able to occasionally/frequently lift, carry push, and/or pull objects of not more than 20 pounds.
- Must be able to frequently bend, kneel, stoop, crouch, climb, crawl, and/or squat
- Frequent reaching and twisting, including reaching above shoulder height
- Manual dexterity, and finger/wrist and hand repetitions are needed; frequent repetitive motion; frequent writing and typing; frequent grasping, holding and reaching.
- Frequent computer use, including use of keyboard and mouse.
- Speaking and hearing are essential to the communication needs of the position; constant hearing and speaking in person and on the phone, via remote video teleconferencing platforms.
- Must be able to be physically present at the worksite and occasionally travel for meetings or conferences.

- Salary: Competitive, starting range $99k+ with a preliminary admin credential
- Start Date: An exceptional candidate will assume a full time role no later than July 1st, 2026
