Reports to: Athletic Director Date Revised: 3/14/2024 Summary: The certified athletic coach is involved in designing and implementing a flexible, educationally sound, extracurricular athletic program favorable to learning and personal growth of the student participant. The coach shall establish an effective rapport with students and staff, motivate students and staff, and develop skills, attitudes and knowledge of participants. The coach shall help each student learn skills that will contribute to the participant’s development as a mature, capable, and responsible person.RESPONSIBILITIES & ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Assume responsibility for the overall development and coordination of the particular activity. Establish practice schedules, programs of development and training rules, within the limits of the particular activity, to best prepare the individual participant and the squad as a whole. Assist in developing and implementing Riceville Board Policy and coaching philosophies to the assistant coaches, the players, and the public. Consult with administration and coaching staff to develop or establish individual and staff coaching responsibilities within the particular activity. Assist the administration in the development and implementation of policies and practices to improve the total extra-curricular activities offered by the school system. Be responsible for the supervision of all squad members in the locker rooms, during practice, and during games. Be responsible for the supervision of all squad members after games and when the team returns from away games. The coach is responsible for all students until they leave the building. It is the coach's responsibility to see that all students do leave the building and lock all doors after students have departed. It is the coach's responsibility to see that all students (especially younger students) have found a way home. Do not leave any student unsupervised waiting at the school. Instruct athletes and equipment managers as to proper fit and treatment of athletic equipment. Issue and maintain all equipment, establish adequate equipment safety checks and inventory all equipment for the particular activity. Support and encourage the philosophy of the Riceville High School Athletic Department. Accept responsibility for using professional judgment in dealing with any activity related injury, including: proper use of emergency first aid treatment, consulting proper medical authorities, and reporting injuries to administration. Make recommendations to the Athletic Director for assistant coaching assignments, for hiring game officials, and for scheduling events and contests. Recommend, in writing, needed purchases to maintain adequate equipment replacement in the particular activity. Recruit student managers. Consult the Athletic Director concerning use of facilities. Submit to the Athletic Director a complete squad roster at the start of each season and game roster at least one week prior to the first competition. File a year-end report with the Athletic Director that includes: inventory, condition of equipment, season accomplishments, names of participants, awards presented or earned, etc. Continue to improve coaching techniques and knowledge by reading articles, subscribing to current literature and attending IHSAA and IGHSAU rules’ meetings. Assume responsibility of checking academic eligibility of participants in the particular activity. Assume responsibility of proper completion of physical examination and insurance forms by the participants in the particular activity. Promote the extra-curricular and academic programs of the school system. Responsible for the care, maintenance, and preparation of playing fields and areas. Works cooperatively with other administrative personnel, students, faculty members, and patrons of the District. Prepare articles for the local news, which covers preseason events, game stories, and postseason coverage. Set, teach, and demonstrate high standards of sportsmanship.
