Job Description

This phlebotomist role focuses on performing high-quality blood draws and specimen collections while ensuring accurate labeling, handling, and documentation in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital environment. You will interact directly with patients, clearly explaining procedures in a courteous manner, and support high standards of safety and regulatory compliance. Responsibilities

• Perform blood draws and other specimen collections using approved venipuncture techniques, including straight needles and butterfly needles.
• Explain venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures to patients in a clear, professional, and courteous manner.
• Collect, label, and store specimens according to established procedures and test requirements.
• Verify that all test orders and specimen labels are 100% accurate before processing.
• Centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders.
• Place specimens in appropriate collection containers and store them at the required temperatures.
• Record maintenance data and decontamination activities accurately and in a timely manner.
• Update patient information and related documentation in accordance with laboratory or hospital protocols.
• Interpret and follow physicians’ orders correctly to ensure proper specimen collection and processing.
• Understand and comply with OSHA and other applicable safety and regulatory guidelines for blood draws and specimen handling.
• Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work area to support efficient and compliant laboratory operations.
• Provide professional, respectful patient care while working with individuals from diverse backgrounds and demographics.

Essential Skills

• Previous phlebotomy experience is required.
• Minimum of 6 months of prior experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting.
• Demonstrated proficiency in blood draws using both straight needles and butterfly needles.
• Strong understanding of venipuncture techniques and specimen collection procedures.
• Ability to accurately label, centrifuge, split, freeze, and store specimens according to test orders.
• Skill in updating patient information and maintaining accurate records.
• Ability to interpret and follow physicians’ orders related to specimen collection and testing.
• Knowledge of OSHA safety standards and compliance requirements related to blood draws and specimen handling.
• Attention to detail to ensure all tests and labels are correct and complete.
• Professional communication skills to explain procedures clearly and courteously to patients.
• Capability to work effectively in a fast-paced medical, laboratory, or hospital environment.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Phlebotomy certification is highly beneficial and supports success in this role.
• Experience or interest in health care and medical environments.
• Interest in pursuing or gaining a Bachelor’s degree in Health Sciences, supported by the experience gained in this position.
• Strong commitment to patient care and community health, working with individuals from a wide range of demographics.
• Ability to maintain composure and professionalism while managing multiple tasks in a busy setting.

Work Environment

This role is based in a fast-paced medical or laboratory environment where you will perform blood draws and specimen collection throughout the day. The position follows a first-shift schedule, with hours of Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and Tuesday and Thursday from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. You will work with standard phlebotomy equipment, including straight needles, butterfly needles, collection tubes, centrifuges, and specimen storage systems that require adherence to specific temperature and handling guidelines. The environment emphasizes safety, cleanliness, and compliance with OSHA standards, and you will be part of a team dedicated to providing essential health services to the community

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Norfolk, NE.

The pay range for this position is $22.25 - $22.25/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
