RN Progressive Care Unit

Job Summary:


The Registered Nurse in the Progressive Care Unit (PCU) provides specialized nursing care to adult acute care patients requiring more advanced monitoring and treatment than general medical-surgical units. This role involves managing patients with continuous pulse-oximetry and telemetry monitoring, airway management, acute BIPAP support, and IV medication infusions. The nurse collaborates with a multidisciplinary team to deliver evidence-based, compassionate care in a fast-paced, critical care step-down environment.

Responsibilities:

• Perform comprehensive patient assessments and continuous monitoring of vital signs including pulse-oximetry and telemetry.
• Manage airway support including nasal cannula, oxygen face masks, portable oxygen tanks, and non-invasive airway management.
• Administer and manage peripheral IV lines and titrated medicated IV infusions.
• Interpret cardiac dysrhythmias and respond appropriately using rapid response and code teams.
• Provide care for patients with arterial lines, central lines, and acute BIPAP support.
• Implement isolation precautions and infection control measures.
• Document patient care accurately using EPIC electronic medical records.
• Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to develop and implement individualized care plans.
• Maintain vigilance and adaptability to rapidly changing patient conditions.

Required Skills & Certifications:

• Active Registered Nurse license in New York State (must have license in hand).
• Minimum 1 year of experience in medical-surgical nursing or related acute care setting.
• BLS certification.
• NIHSS certification (must be included in application).
• Proficiency with EPIC electronic health record system.
• Skills in cardiac monitoring, interpretation of dysrhythmias, and emergency response protocols.
• Competence in IV therapy and phlebotomy, including peripheral line care and management.

Preferred Skills & Certifications:

• Experience working in a critical care step-down or intermediate care unit.
• Familiarity with airway management devices and non-invasive ventilation techniques.
• Additional certifications relevant to progressive care nursing.

Special Considerations:

• Must be able to manage a patient ratio of 1:5 to 1:7 on a medical-surgical unit.
• Work environment includes a 26-bed Intermediate Care Unit with a multidisciplinary team approach.
• Strict adherence to isolation precautions and infection control policies.
• Must reside within a 75-mile radius of the facility.

Scheduling:

• Three 12-hour night shifts per week.
• Work every other weekend.
