PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The Cancer Genomics Research Laboratory (CGR) investigates the contribution of germline and somatic genetic variation to cancer susceptibility and outcomes in support of the NCI's Division of Cancer Epidemiology and Genetics (DCEG), the world’s most comprehensive cancer epidemiology research group. CGR is located at the NCI-Shady Grove campus in Rockville, MD and operated by Leidos Biomedical Research, Inc. We care deeply about discovering the genetic and environmental determinants of cancer, and new approaches to cancer prevention, through our contributions to the molecular, genetic, and epidemiologic research of the 70+ investigators in DCEG. Working in concert with epidemiologists, biostatisticians and basic research scientists in DCEG’s intramural research program, CGR provides the capacity to conduct genome-wide discovery studies and targeted regional approaches to identify the heritable determinants of various forms of cancer. This includes the design and analysis of high throughput studies using various types of “–omics” technologies such as array- and sequence-based genome-wide association studies, studies of tumor characteristics using integrated genomic data analysis, and molecular epidemiologic studies based on novel assays focused on the metabolome and microbiome. We are seeking a highly motivated, independent scientist to join our team to provide guidance and support across a range of sequencing technologies for the benefit of DCEG investigators, especially in the areas of viral genomics and somatic analysis.

KEY ROLES/RESPONSIBILITIES

We are recruiting for a Scientist position within the Cancer Genomics Research Laboratory to work closely with CGR’s genomics laboratory and bioinformatics teams as well as with DCEG investigators. The successful candidate will have responsibility for supporting experimental design, analyzing sequencing data, and identifying novel strategies for sequencing applications. Key responsibilities include: Utilize molecular biology expertise to support the design of experimental plans for novel research questions, especially in the area of long-read sequencing for both DNA and RNA. Contribute to the improvement of viral genomics applications, including laboratory strategies and analytical approaches to assign serotype and lineage. Work with DCEG investigators and CGR’s bioinformatics team to review analytical findings and provide interpretation, guidance, and feedback. Contribute to troubleshooting discussions in the development of laboratory assays or analytic strategies. Work seamlessly and collaboratively with multiple teams across CGR including the genomics and bioinformatics groups, MDPL, as well as DCEG investigators. Ensure traceability and knowledge sharing with clear communication of research and recommendations. Support preparation of scientific publications, abstracts, posters, and presentations. Perform literature review and remain current with scientific advancements in the fields of viral genomics, long-read sequencing, and analysis of genomic data.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

To be considered for this position, you must minimally meet the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed below: Possession of PhD degree from an accredited college/university according to the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA). Foreign degrees must be evaluated for U.S. equivalency Relevant doctoral research experience in an academic, clinical, or industry laboratory setting Strong foundational knowledge in molecular biology and viral genomics Hands‑on experience with long‑read RNA and DNA sequencing, especially Oxford Nanopore, and sequencing of human papillomavirus genomes Experience with a wide range of specimens and analytes used in genomics, including DNA, RNA, and FFPE Experience with cell culture Experience using automated high‑throughput laboratory equipment, such as next‑generation sequencing equipment including use, maintenance, and method development Knowledge of standard laboratory techniques, instrumentation, and scientific methodologies Ability to analyze and interpret scientific data accurately Strong problem‑solving and critical thinking abilities Effective written and verbal scientific communication skills Ability to work independently while contributing to collaborative research teams Experience evaluating and interpreting sequencing data generated from multiple NGS platforms Demonstrated ability to deliver highly complex scientific information to a broad range of researchers and technical staff Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance
