(AIS) is a national scientific services firm supporting maritime activities requiring certification of compliance with environmental regulations as well as collecting data for use by Federal, State, Municipal, and other government agencies along the U.S. coastline. AIS is looking for Marine Biologists (At-Sea Monitors) to work at sea collecting and recording data and biological samples for the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) Northeast Fisheries Science Center (NEFCS) aboard commercial fishing vessels. Program Overview The primary goals of Northeast federal fishery observation programs are to provide quantitative biological, vessel, and gear-selectivity information for various New England and Mid-Atlantic fisheries. The At-Sea Monitor program focuses specifically on the groundfish industry, a grouping of fish that includes many commonly consumed species such as cod, haddock, and flounder. Each fishery observer or monitor operates on commercial fishing vessels throughout New England and the Mid-Atlantic. Job Requirements & Responsibilities At-Sea Monitors record detailed information on gear and fishing activity of the vessels. Monitors work deckside on vessels ranging from 20 to 100 feet on trips of 1 to 14 days, collecting data on fish catch, discard, and incidental takes such as marine mammals, seabirds, and turtles. After a three‑week paid training in Falmouth, MA, monitors are deployed from ports across New England and the Mid‑Atlantic. Gear types assessed include trawl, gillnet, longline, and handline. Candidates must be mentally prepared to be away from home for multiple days and physically able to handle heavy lifting, work odd hours, and endure long days in rough seas. Compensation & Benefits Starting pay: $19.00 per hour. Eligible for an additional $4.57 per hour for the first 40 hours worked each calendar week, totaling $23.57 per hour. Full‑time position with benefits. Annual earnings between $35,000 and $55,000, depending on availability and sea day accomplishments. Paid minimum of 12 hours for each offshore calendar day and additional compensable activities while on land. Benefits package includes health, dental, vacation, sick, and holiday benefits. Additional compensation may include data quality bonuses, service awards, fitness center reimbursement, and referral bonuses. Travel reimbursed at an hourly rate; mileage on personal vehicles and per diem paid at the specified Government rate. Minimum Requirements High school diploma required. Experience with data entry on computers. Must be a U.S. citizen or legally authorized to work in the U.S. Physically able to perform observer duties as certified by a licensed physician. Own transportation required. Commit to the program for at least one year. Preferred Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in biology or related field with 30 credits of biology coursework and 6 credits of marine science preferred. At least one undergraduate course in math or statistics preferred. At‑sea experience. Coursework in dichotomous keys. Experience collecting field data and entering databases.
