University of Texas at Austin Dell Medical School
About Dell Medical School
As part of The University of Texas at Austin, one of the nation’s leading research universities, the Dell Medical School pursues innovation in the redesign of healthcare delivery, excellence in healthcare research, and programs in interdisciplinary and inter-professional education. It is the fifth medical school in the UT System and the first medical school established in nearly five decades by a member of the Association of American Universities, an organization of leading public and private research universities.
The University of Texas Medical Center, anchored by Dell Medical School, is defining the future of health. Announced in August 2023 with planning and implementation underway, The University of Texas Medical Center will cement Austin as a premier destination for health care alongside other major Texas cities. With two new, state-of-the-art hospitals – A UT specialty hospital and a cancer center being built by MD Anderson – plus the academic and research expertise of UT, The University of Texas Medical Center will provide the integrated, world-class care that is a hallmark of academic medicine.
The Dell Medical School is especially interested in qualified candidates who can contribute to excellence within the learning health system.
About the Program
The Department of Neurology at The University of Texas Dell Medical School (DMS), in conjunction with the UT Health Austin Pediatric Neurosciences at Dell Children’s, is recruiting a second pediatric neuromuscular physician to join the Dell Children’s Pediatric Neuromuscular Disease Center and our growing Pediatric Neurology faculty. The UT Health Austin Pediatric Neurosciences at Dell Children’s is a multidisciplinary program that encompasses pediatric neurology, pediatric rehabilitation medicine, pediatric neurosurgery, pediatric neuropsychology, and pediatric neuro-ophthalmology. We are excited to expand our Pediatric Neuromuscular Disease Center which is currently comprised of a pediatric neuromuscular disease physician, collaborations with pediatric rehabilitation medicine, a program administrator, nurse navigator and a full complement of additional support staff. We have an established multidisciplinary MDA clinic with support from cardiology, pulmonology, therapy services and social work to support the highest level of comprehensive care for this patient population. We are Central Texas' primary referral site for positive new born screenings with a neuromuscular disease diagnosis. Our Neuromuscular Disease Center provides life changing interventions, such as gene therapies as well as disease modifying therapies/infusions. Furthermore, EMG/NCS, muscle biopsies and skin biopsies are fully supported in our inpatient and outpatient settings. Since the neuroscience program’s inception in 2019, the pediatric neurology faculty has grown to 20 child neurologists, including individuals with expertise in epilepsy, neuromuscular disorders, stroke, headache, neurogenetics, neurodevelopment, NeuroNICU, autonomics, and neuroimmunology. The hospital supports our consultation neurology services, and outpatient space is available in the adjoining 44,000 square foot neurosciences clinic within the Dell Children’s Specialty Pavilion.
The pediatric neurosciences program currently hosts a child neurology residency along with fellowships in pediatric epilepsy, pediatric headache, and pediatric neuropsychology. Adult neurophysiology residents train in the pediatric program, and we plan to add fellowships in pediatric neuromuscular disease and pediatric rehabilitation medicine.
Dell Children’s Medical Center is a 300-bed freestanding facility that features a level 1 pediatric trauma center, a level 4 neonatal intensive care unit, a level 4 epilepsy center, and Magnet recognition for nursing excellence.
