Boys Soccer - Varsity Head Coach

Position Type: Athletics/Activities/ Head Coaching Date Posted: 2/26/2026 Location: Proviso East High School Date Available: Upon Approval Job Title: Boys Soccer - Varsity Head Coach Reports To: Director of Athletics and Activities; Building Principal or Designee Stipend: As set forth in Article VIII.D ("Stipends") of the Proviso Teachers Union Collective Bargaining Agreement (July 1, 2024 through June 30, 2028). Please see the stipend schedule* on the District website or view it directly here: This position is contingent upon sufficient student participation and the approval of District 209 to run the program. Position Overview This position is responsible for leading and managing the athletic program for the sport. The coach will work closely with students, faculty, administrators, and parents to implement a comprehensive and competitive program. Under the supervision of the Athletic Director, the coach assumes overall responsibility for the program, fostering a positive and disciplined team culture. The ideal candidate must demonstrate strong interpersonal skills, enthusiasm, and the ability to work collaboratively within the school community. A successful track record in teaching and coaching is expected. Qualifications Required Experience & Training Valid Illinois State Teaching Certificate (Type 03, 09, or 10) OR ASEP/NFHS Certification, as mandated by the Illinois High School Association (IHSA). Compliance with Illinois state law and IHSA regulations regarding CPR and AED certification for all high school athletic coaches. Completion of IHSA-mandated concussion awareness training and other safety protocols as required by state and federal regulations, including the Youth Sports Concussion Safety Act (105 ILCS 5/22-80). Background check and fingerprinting clearance in accordance with the Illinois School Code and IHSA eligibility requirements. Completion of federal Title IX training to ensure compliance with anti-discrimination laws in athletics. In-depth knowledge of the sport, including rules, techniques, and strategies. Prior successful coaching experience in the assigned sport. Strong instructional skills in both individual and team fundamentals, strategy, and physical conditioning. Commitment to fostering a diverse, inclusive, and equitable athletic program that supports the academic and personal development of all student‑athletes. Coaching Certification: For non‑teaching staff, possession of a current coaching certification through the American Sport Education Program (ASEP), National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS), or other IHSA‑approved programs is required. Concussion Certification: Completion of state‑mandated concussion certification is necessary, with certifications typically valid for two years. Responsibilities Oversee and manage all aspects of the program. Demonstrate strong leadership, supervisory, and organizational skills in program implementation. Foster a cooperative, enthusiastic, and inclusive environment for students, faculty, fellow coaches, and parents. Exhibit excellent public relations skills and maintain positive relationships with stakeholders. Inspire and motivate student‑athletes and coaching staff by setting an example of dedication and professionalism. Plan, coordinate, and implement training programs based on current best practices in the sport. Instruct athletes and assistant coaches in fundamental skills, team strategies, and safety protocols. Establish and enforce standards of conduct and sportsmanship among student‑athletes. Ensure adherence to school, district, IHSA, Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE), and federal regulations regarding high school athletics. Maintain compliance with Title IX requirements ensuring equal opportunities for all student‑athletes. Collaborate with the Athletic Director to develop a competitive annual game schedule. Maintain and oversee the proper use and care of school‑owned athletic equipment. Adhere to all IHSA rules regarding student eligibility, transfers, and recruiting restrictions. Report any violations or incidents that may impact student‑athlete safety or eligibility to the Athletic Director and IHSA officials as required. Ensure that student‑athletes maintain academic eligibility and support their educational success through mentoring and coordination with faculty and staff. Collaborate with the Athletic Director to establish budgetary requirements for the upcoming season, recommend equipment guidelines, and operate within budget appropriations. Account for all equipment, arrange for its issuance, storage, and reconditioning, and submit annual inventory records. Assist in game day preparations as directed by the Athletic Director, ensuring all logistical aspects are managed effectively. Coordinate with the Athletic Director and Principal on matters of purchasing equipment, scheduling, and coaching assignments, and maintain positive relationships with stakeholders. Perform additional duties and responsibilities as assigned by the administration. This stipend position is a non‑tenure, extra‑duty assignment contingent upon sufficient student enrollment, program approval, and available funding. It is not subject to continued renewal and may be discontinued at the district's discretion. *Employees who accept a coaching or activity sponsorship stipend position and are classified as non exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) are subject to federal overtime and timekeeping requirements. These employees will be paid at an hourly rate of $15 per hour and are guaranteed at least the full stipend amount upon satisfactory completion of duties at the conclusion of the term. All coaching and sponsorship duties, including coaching, supervising, practicing, competing, planning, and related activities, count as hours worked. Non exempt employees must be paid overtime for all hours worked over 40 in a workweek. To comply with the FLSA, stipends may not be paid without tracking actual hours worked. All non exempt coaches and activity sponsors must clock in and out and log all hours worked daily in the district's electronic timekeeping system, recording time separately by position, such as primary role and coach or sponsor role. The district's electronic timekeeping system will be used to track hours, determine total hours worked in each position, and calculate overtime accurately. Employees will receive any required overtime compensation calculated using a blended rate that combines their regular hourly rate and the stipend associated with the coaching or sponsorship assignment. Accurate and timely time entry is required to ensure proper pay and maintain FLSA compliance. Employment is subject to the recommendation of the Superintendent of Schools, the approval of the Board of Education and the results and official determination of your criminal history review, the mandatory Faith's Law employment history review and the required processes outlined in Board Policy 5:30. This is an at‑will, extra‑duty appointment and may be discontinued at the District's discretion.
