ArtCenter College of Design is searching for an experienced Facilities Lead Mechanic to join our team. The salary range for this position: $45.00 - 58.00 per hour.

Final salary is based on education, experience, skills relevant to the role, and internal equity.

The primary responsibilities of this position are to maintain the building systems such as heating, air and ventilation (HVAC), lighting and electrical, plumbing, and landscaping, along with providing setup and manpower support for various departments and assist with the delivery of materials, equipment and supplies. The Facilities Lead Mechanic schedules and assigns work to mechanics. This position manages small projects and oversees vendor management.

This is a full-time on-site position with a schedule of Monday through Friday, 6am to 2pm, subject to change with department needs. This position is to be performed on-site as a condition of employment and could include weekends or evenings. The college reserves the right to modify schedules as needed to meet the business needs with appropriate notice.

Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in an shop setting; to stand or walk for prolonged periods of time; including, bending, kneeling, crouching, reaching, squatting, and twisting; to lift, carry, push, and/or pull moderate to heavy amounts of weight (50 pounds, or team-lift up to 100 pounds); to operate office and shop equipment requiring repetitive hand movement and fine coordination, handle or feel objects, tools or controls; and to verbally communicate to exchange information.

Essential Functions:

Maintenance 70%

• Provide complete and timely service on assigned tasks and work orders, which are received verbally, written or via electronic devices
• Perform building related repairs including plumbing, maintenance and upkeep of general appearance of the campus interior and grounds
• Wall restoration and painting
• Troubleshoot and resolve various HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and fire life and safety equipment issues
• Operate forklift, grounds vehicles, power tools, hand tools and related landscaping equipment

Technical Lead 20%

• Provide leadership and guidance to mechanics and make decisions involving initiative
• Assure compliance with appropriate safety practices and procedures and with applicable federal, State and local codes, regulations and requirements
• Prioritize incoming work orders and assign work to mechanics; sets prioritize and timelines
• Review and close out work orders
• Manage PM program
• Manage small projects assigned by the Director of Facilities or Facilities Manager
• Manage multiple third-party vendors to ensure contract compliance

Other Duties 10%

• Provide assistance with delivery of materials, equipment, furniture and supplies
• Provide setup and manpower support for various departments and events
• Follow all College policies including safety protocols
• Perform other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications:

• High school diploma or GED equivalent or technical degree from a recognized trade school, or equivalent experience
• 7 years maintenance and/or building repair on complex systems
• Possess a valid California Driver License
• Read, write and understand the English language to be able to interact with staff, faculty and vendors
• Ability and willingness to work in confined spaces, at heights, indoors, outdoors, and to pull and lift objects up to 50 lbs. in weight
• Flexibility to work weekends, nights and respond to emergency callbacks after hours as needed
• Demonstrated experience in managing work order systems (CMMS) and building automation systems (BMS)
• Must exhibit good customer service skills and the ability to follow through on assigned tasks
• Ability to provide project management and vendor management
• Ability to shift priorities and perform duties under tight and changeable deadline; organize and complete tasks in a timely manner
• Ability to work well in a multi-ethnic and multi-cultural environment with students, faculty and staff

Environment: Work is performed primarily in a shop setting with frequent interruptions and distractions; extended periods of time using shop equipment including computers, viewing computer monitors, hand tools, saws, power tools etc.; interactions with other individuals. Due to the nature of the work environment, there is exposure to loud noises, chemicals, fumes, dust and heat with the HVAC equipment such as compressors and exhaust fans while utilizing issued safety equipment. This position also requires work in an outdoor environment, with occasional exposure to extreme temperatures.

Vision: Must be able to have the visual capacity to perform activities such as preparing and reading reports, viewing a computer terminal and other normal office work with or without correction.

Hearing: Must be able to communicate effectively in the course of normal office communication or exchange ideas with or without correction.
