Critical Care/ICU Nurse Practitioner

Description A locum tenens opportunity is available for a Nurse Practitioner (NP) in Critical Care Medicine beginning August 1, 2026 at a high-acuity academic medical center. This role functions as a critical care responding clinician in the ICU , providing support for adult and geriatric patients in a structured, physician-supervised environment. The assignment includes a full-time day/night rotation with rotating weekends and holidays .

About the facility This is a large academic acute care teaching hospital with a 10-bed ICU and an average daily census of approximately 7 patients . The ICU cares for adult patients with select geriatric cases and a limited number of burn patients.

Clinical Scope

• General ICU and med-surg level care
• 1 2 burn patients occasionally
• NP responsibilities include:
  • Morning ICU rounding with attending
  • Task completion during the day
  • Afternoon rounding and follow-up care

Explicit exclusions (no procedures):

• No intubations
• No central or arterial lines
• No ventilator management
• No transplants
• No echocardiography
• No neuro head cases
• No EVD placements
• No complex stroke management

Job Responsibilities

• Provide ICU-level support as a critical care NP responding clinician
• Participate in daily ICU rounding with attending physicians
• Assist in care coordination and task management for ICU patients
• Support ICU workflow during day and night rotations
• Work rotating weekends and holidays (minimum 2 weekends/month)
• Function under physician supervision in a teaching hospital ICU
• Document and chart in Epic EMR
• Provide continuity of care across shift transitions

Qualifications

• Nurse Practitioner (NP) - required
• Board Certified in Critical Care - required
• Active Massachusetts license - required (no licensing support available)
• ACLS or BLS certification - required
• DEA required
• Minimum 2 years of ICU/critical care experience required
• Must be eligible for credentialing (approx. 90 days)
• Must be a local candidate (no travel support provided)

Working Hours

• Coverage Type: Full-time with rotating schedule
• Shift Length: 13-hour shifts
• Shift Times:
  • 6:00 AM 7:00 PM (day shift)
  • 6:00 PM 7:00 AM (night shift)
• Schedule: Day/night rotation
• Weekend Requirement: Minimum 2 weekends per month
