Summary

The Apparatus Lead Technician is responsible for leading and performi​ng inspection, testing, maintenance, troubleshooting, commissioning, and repair of electrical power distribution apparatus and systems in industrial and commercial environments. This position serves as the technical lead on assigned projects and provides field direction to technicians while ensuring work is completed safely, accurately, efficiently, and in accordance with applicable standards, customer requirements, and Taurus Industrial Group (TIG) procedures. The Apparatus Lead Technician works directly with customers, project leadership, and other Power & Reliability personnel to evaluate equipment condition, identify deficiencies, troubleshoot electrical issues, and ensure reliable operation of electrical power systems.

Minimum Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Technical degree, electrical apprenticeship, military electrical training, or equivalent technical training preferred.
• Minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible experience testing, maintaining, troubleshooting, or commissioning electrical power distribution equipment.
• Demonstrated experience leading field crews or providing technical direction to other technicians.
• Experience working with low- and medium-voltage electrical equipment and power distribution systems.
• Experience with electrical testing equipment and interpretation of test results.
• Ability to read and interpr​et electrical drawings, schematics, one-line diagrams, wiring diagrams, and equipment manuals.
• Working knowledge of applicable electrical safety practices and industry standards.
• Valid driver's license and ability to meet company driving requirements when driving is an essential function of the position.
• Ability to travel and work overtime, nights, weekends, and outages as required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Advanced knowledge of electrical power distribution equipment and apparatus testing practices.
• Knowledge of low- and medium-voltage switchgear, circuit breakers, transformers, motor control centers, protective devices, and associated electrical equipment.
• Knowledge of electrical testing methods including insulation resistance, contact resistance, turns ratio, power factor/power factor insulation testing, and other applicable diagnostic testing.
• Working knowledge of NFPA 70E and electrical safe work practices.
• Familiarity with NETA testing practices and applicable ANSI, IEEE, and manufacturer standards.
• Ability to troubleshoot electrical equipment and identify equipment deficiencies or abnormal test results.
• Ability to safely operate electrical test equipment and specialized diagnostic instruments.
• Ability to interpret test data and compare results against manufacturer specifications and applicable industry standards.
• Strong mechanical and electrical troubleshooting skills.
• Ability to organize and lead field activities while maintaining project schedules and quality expectations.
• Ability to provide technical guidance, training, and mentorship to technicians.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to communicate professionally with customers, supervisors, engineers, and other project personnel.
• Ability to accurately complete field documentation, test reports, and service reports.

Essential Functions

• Lead and perform inspection, testing, maintenance, troubleshooting, commissioning, and repair of electrical power distribution apparatus.
• Perform testing and maintenance of low- and medium-voltage switchgear, circuit breakers, transformers, motor control centers, switches, and related equipment.
• Perform electrical and mechanical inspections to evaluate equipment condition and identify deficiencies.
• Perform applicable electrical tests using specialized test equipment and evaluate results for accuracy and equipment condition.
• Troubleshoot equipment failures, abnormal operating conditions, and electrical system problems.
• Lead field crews and coordinate daily work activities to meet project scope, schedule, safety, and quality requirements.
• Review job scope, drawings, specifications, procedures, and customer requirements before beginning work.
• Conduct or participate in pre-job planning, job safety analyses, and daily safety meetings.
• Ensure technicians understand assigned tasks, hazards, testing procedures, and required safety precautions.
• Verify proper test equipment, tools, materials, and PPE are available and appropriate for the work being performed.
• Ensure test equipment is properly maintained and within required calibration periods.
• Interpret electrical one-lines, schematics, wiring diagrams, equipment drawings, and manufacturer documentation.
• Review testing results and identify conditions requiring additional investigation, repair, or corrective action.
• Document equipment deficiencies and communicate findings to project leadership and customers.
• Prepare and review accurate field test sheets, service reports, deficiency reports, and other required project documentation.
• Coordinate testing and commissioning activities with customers, contractors, engineers, and other trades.
• Assist with equipment startup, energization, commissioning, and return-to-service activities.
• Provide technical guidance, hands-on training, and mentorship to junior and developing technicians.
• Promote compliance with TIG safety policies, customer requirements, NFPA 70E requirements, and applicable industry standards.
• Maintain a professional working relationship with customers and represent TIG appropriately at customer facilities.
• Support emergency response, outages, shutdowns, and other time-sensitive field assignments as required.
• Perform other duties as assigned.​

Physical Demands

• Ability to regularly stand, walk, sit, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, and move throughout active industrial facilities and electrical equipment areas.
• Ability to walk and work on uneven terrain, gravel, concrete, elevated platforms, and other industrial surfaces.
• Ability to climb stairs and ladders as required to access electrical equipment and work areas.
• Ability to work at various elevations and in confined or restricted equipment areas when properly trained and authorized.
• Ability to wear required PPE, including electrical and arc-rated PPE, for extended periods.
• Ability to visually inspect electrical equipment, wiring, test instru​ments, drawings, and test results.
• Ability to safely handle and operate electrical testing equipment, hand tools, and related equipment.
• Ability to frequently lift, carry, push, or pull tools and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
• Ability to communicate effectively in environments with moderate to elevated noise levels.

Work Environment 

This position primarily works in indu​strial facilities, power generation facilities, substations, manufacturing plants, petrochemical facilities, and other customer locations. Work may be performed indoors and outdoors and may involve exposure to electrical hazards, energized equipment, elevated noise levels, moving equipment, chemicals, dust, fumes, heat, cold, and varying weather conditions. The position requires strict adherence to electrical safe work practices and the use of appropriate PPE. Frequent travel and work outside normal business hours may be required, including nights, weekends, holidays, outages, shutdowns, and emergency assignments based on customer and project requirements.
